Q.1. What is refractive surgery?

Assalam ul Alaikum! Today we will talk about refractive surgery. It is the kind that gets rid of glasses for good. It is an excimer laser surgery in which the laser is used to reshape the cornea. This is a procedure in which the front surface of the cornea is directly sculpted by the excimer laser. After the procedure, the patient can see as good without their glasses as they could with them.

Q.2. What are the different types of refractive surgery?

Well, right now the gold standard across the globe is femto-LASIK. Femto-LASIK is the procedure that is done on a routine basis across the globe. The healing time after this procedure is 48 to 72 hours. Additionally, it is less painful and causes fewer tears in the eye.

Apart from this, there is another procedure that is done routinely that is called, Photorefractive Keratectomy. However, femto-Lasik is a better standard of procedure.

Q.3. How long does refractive surgery last?

Once done correctly on the right patient, it is a lifelong procedure. Provided that the patient is a viable candidate and doesn’t have any eye diseases, this procedure is for a lifetime.

Q.4. What are the pros and cons of refractive surgery?

Well, refractive surgery has many benefits, the removal of glasses being the most obvious one. A lot of professions now require candidates to be “glasses-free” such as armed forces, airforce and contact sports.

Q.5. What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that affects the eyes. It’s caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina).
