Back pain, also known as kamar dard in Urdu is one of the most common health problems affecting people of all ages, often attributed to poor posture, physical habits, or medical conditions.
While it sometimes feels like a mild discomfort, it can also present as sudden and sharp, which can affect everyday activities.
Mild cases of back pain can be handled quite easily at home through common home-based strategies and lifestyle changes.
Severe back pain which cannot be managed at home requires treatment by a medical professional.
Let’s look at back pain and its treatments for improved comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

Back pain arises from different causes and is a result of several contributing factors, such as:
Home remedies that you can do to relieve back pain are as follows:
When you use an ice pack for the first 24 to 48 hours after your injury, you reduce swelling and inflammation. Then you can use heat, such as warm compresses, heating pads, etc.
This can help the muscles release after they are stiff and allow more flexibility and blood flow for healing from the injury.
Gentle exercises, such as yoga, swimming, and walking, are excellent options to strengthen your core and back muscles, help prevent stiffness and improve mobility.
Staying active helps speed up recovery from back pain, while too much bed rest can make the pain worse.
Improper posture can create uneven pressure on your spine, whether you are sitting or standing.
Try proper ergonomic chairs, sit with your back straight or in an up and down posture, and make sure that your screen is at eye level to help with back pain.
People who work in offices can also use a back support to ensure they sit with correct posture.
Treatment with therapeutic massage can relieve some of the tension in muscles. Consider relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness, which might help reduce stress that sometimes increases back pain.
A poor sleeping position can sometimes contribute to or exacerbate back pain. Mayo Clinic recommends sleeping flat on your back with a pillow under your knees and one supporting your neck to reduce back pain.
Medical treatments for back pain are as follows:
For mild pain, doctors will generally recommend non-prescription medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
For more severe cases or other types of pain, other medications like muscle relaxants, stronger pain medications, or nerve pain medication may be prescribed.
A physiotherapist will first assess your individual requirements and then develop a customised program that will incorporate stretches, strengthening exercises, or posture exercises.
These exercises will not only reduce pain at the time but also activate abdominal and back muscles in ways that will reduce the likelihood of experiencing similar pain in the future.
If pain originates from a nerve that is irritated or inflamed, your doctor may treat it with a corticosteroid injection, such as epidural spinal injections.
These injections are limited in number for patients and typically provide short-term pain relief, such that patients can maintain physical therapy or daily activities.
Surgery is typically seen as a treatment of last resort after other treatments are no longer effective. Surgery for conditions like a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or structural deformities of the spine may be recommended by orthopedic surgeons in severe cases.
Back pain is often frustrating; however, in most cases, it is a manageable condition. Small lifestyle changes can typically greatly improve back pain, such as practising better posture, engaging in regular exercise, and using heat or cold.
If you are still experiencing pain after trying the above options, there are many medical options available, including physiotherapy, medication, and, in rare cases, surgery.
Yes, sitting too long, especially without back support, can increase pressure on the spine and cause back pain. Try to take little breaks to stretch and take short walks when you can to prevent additional pain.
Walking is one of the best light exercises you can do for back pain. Walking improves circulation, builds and strengthens muscles, and supports your spine while putting less stress on your back.
