Rising Obesity In Pakistan: Q & A With Dr. Tahir Ebrahim Yunus

Rising obesity is an immediate threat to our natural health. Besides unhealthy dietary habits, changing lifestyles and physical inactivity are the main contributing factors for the increased prevalence rate of obesity in Pakistan.

We sat down with Dr. Tahir Ebrahim Yunus, one of the top laparoscopic and bariatric surgeons in Pakistan with over 20 years of experience in the field to tell us more about the challenges of rising obesity levels in Pakistan and the prevention, management, and treatment options available.

Q.1. What is the current situation of obesity and overweight in Pakistan?

Obesity is on the rise in Pakistan. It is seen almost everywhere these days and numerous people in Pakistan are being affected by it. The side effects of obesity are deadly; such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart diseases
  • Joint problems
  • Infertility

Last year, I helped 25 patients lose weight through surgery who were childless for 10 to 15 years and now they have conceived.

Q.2. What can you tell us about bariatric surgery used to treat obesity?

Well, of course, weight loss procedures can be done by bariatric surgery. They are recommended only for patients who are unable to achieve their weight goals with a healthy diet, exercise, and other supportive medications, and their weight is causing a serious risk to their health. There are three most common bariatric procedures popular worldwide:

1. Sleeve gastrectomy

It is a type of weight-loss surgery that involves removing part of the stomach to make it smaller by 80%.

2. Laparoscopic keyhole surgery

Laparoscopic keyhole surgery is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and make 4 to 5 circular incisions in the skin. The patient loses 60% of the weight in the next six months.

3. Gastric bypass surgery

It is a type of surgery in which the surgeon makes changes to your stomach and small intestine that alters the way you digest food. This is normally performed on patients who have been suffering from diabetes for more than 10 years, are elderly, and find it difficult to lose weight.

Q.3. Would you like to give your viewers any health messages?

Well, I believe many diseases can be avoided if one loses weight naturally and adopts a healthy lifestyle. I advise people to stay away from toxic junk food such as oily, greasy foods, chips, burgers, pizzas, sweets, and fizzy drinks. I believe that if you have a hold over your diet, I would never recommend you for surgery.
