Sinusitis Symptoms, Treatment And Prevention: Q And A With Dr. Anwar-ul-haq

Sinusitis is a common inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, caused by infection or allergy. Healthy sinuses are filled with air. But when they become blocked and filled with fluid, germs can grow and cause an infection. The common cold is one of the major reasons why sinuses become blocked.

If you suffer from sinusitis on a regular basis, Dr. Anwar Ul Haq, an experienced ENT surgeon in Lahore will answer all your concerns related to the symptoms, diagnosis and prevention of this allergy.

Q.1. What are sinuses?

Sinuses are a system of interconnected hollow spaces in the skull and link to the nasal passages by small channels. Sinuses help humidify the air we breathe and enhance our voices. Everyone has four sinus cavities, each with a connection to the nasal passage.

Q.2. What is sinusitis?

Well, sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses, the cavities that produce the mucus necessary for the nasal passages to work effectively. Sinusitis can be of different types; allergic, one that is treatable by medicine. On the other hand, sinusitis can also be infective, such as bacterial, viral and fungal.

Q.3. What are the symptoms of sinusitis?

The first major symptom of sinusitis is a blocked nose. The reason for the blocked nose can be determined by an X-Ray, or a CT-scan or an MRI if needed.

Other symptoms include watery eyes, leakage of fluid or blood or both from the nose, facial pain and pressure and headache.

Q.4. What is the diagnosis of sinusitis?

Nose issues are mainly diagnosed through a thorough inspection, mostly with the help of an X-ray. CT is also done if you are unsure about the results from the X-ray. In cases where the brain and eye are involved, an MRI needs to be done.

Q.5. What are the best treatments available for sinusitis?

Well, first we judge if the disease can get relieved on its own or if it requires surgery. We always try to cure the problem with medication first, but in the worst-case scenario, surgery has to be done.

If surgery is required, then it is done by a minimally invasive technique called FESS. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive surgical treatment which uses nasal endoscopes to enlarge the nasal drainage pathways of the paranasal sinuses to improve sinus ventilation.
