The Abc Of Skincare: Vitamin A, Vitamin B And Vitamin C

Great skincare health starts with proper nutrition, and intake of vitamins that maintain skin health and repair the damage, are essential for a healthy glow. Vitamins keep the skin looking healthy and youthful, with a reduction in dark spots, redness, rough patches and wrinkles. The best and the natural source of vitamins and minerals is fresh fruit and vegetables. Read on to find which vitamins you should use for great skin:

Vitamin A:

Abundant in antioxidants, vitamin A is a source of retinoid that improves skin cell turnover and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The foods that are rich in vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes and spinach.

A component of vitamin A called retinoid is also used in anti-ageing skincare serums and creams. Therefore, both intake of this vitamin as well topical application are great for the skin.

Vitamin B:

Niacinamide or vitamin B3 is found in many skincare products. This vitamin increases the production of fatty acids and ceramides that maintain the barrier of the skin. This stronger barrier is more resistant to damage and better at keeping the moisture in.

A lack of this vitamin causes dermatitis—inflammation of the outer skin layer. Vitamin B also helps in rosacea-prone skin and improves the appearance of redness. Because of its ability to inhibit the transfer of pigments to skin cells, this vitamin also minimizes the appearance of dark spots and age spots. For best results, vitamin B3 should be applied in the morning and evening.

Vitamin C:

This vitamin can be found in the outer and the inner layers of skin (dermis and epidermis). Moreover, it is a powerful antioxidant that combats oxidative stressors and membrane damaging compounds. This vitamin also helps natural collagen synthesis and thus maintains the plumpness of skin. The importance of this vitamin can be assessed by the fact that a lack of it impairs wound healing and the healing process in the body.

Good intake of vitamin C also prevents dryness. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C is 1000 mg/day. Fruits are a rich source of this vitamin, especially citrus fruits like oranges and lemons. Other sources include strawberries, broccoli and spinach. Supplements containing vitamin C are also readily available and can be used for great skin and general health.

Vitamin E:

Another great antioxidant with powerful abilities is vitamin E. Because of its ability to fight free radicals, it can help prevent skin damage due to UV radiation. Other stressors like smoke also have less effect on the skin in the presence of vitamin E. A good product contains about 1 percent of vitamin E.

Furthermore, this vitamin also helps to quell dryness by helping the skin retain natural moisturizers. It should be applied before or after serious sun exposure, to reverse the damage caused by penetrating UV radiation.
