Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Treatment for Treatment Resistant OCD, Depression, Anxiety and Autism

Psychiatric illness like depression, anxiety, OCD etc. are usually managed with medication, psychotherapies and behavioural therapies but in some patients they are resistant and does not get better with routine treatment options. Such patients have huge files with prescriptions of different doctors but nothing is helping them. for such patients we have a good news. In twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad we have introduced this FDA approved treatment for resistant patients which is called transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Indications for TMS

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Migraines with aura
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Smoking cessation
  • Anxiety comorbid with major depressive disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Chronic pain
  • Post-stroke rehabilitation
  • Autism

Side effects

  • Scalp pain or discomfort
  • Could not be done in patients with pace maker
  • Could not be done in patients with metallic implants

Own experience at PIMH Rawalpindi

  • More than 200 patients of depression, anxiety, addictions, OCD, headaches and autism managed in last 1.5 years with success rate of more than 70%.
  • Mild side effects observed in 18 patients including headache and muscle tightness responding to paracetamol
  • Youngest child done was 3.5 years, oldest lady was 74 years
  • One pregnant female also completed 6 weeks, got remission without major adverse effects
