What Should Be Your Summer Skincare Routine?

Summers come with a whole new set of demands for the skin and a change in skincare regimen. With the increase in heat and humidity, the skincare concerns and goals take a completely new turn. During summers, there is an increase in issues like clogged pores (due to sunscreen), freckles and melasma due to sun damage, breakouts, fine lines, and dehydrated skin etc.

So, how can you work on achieving a flawless skin routine this summer without the hassle of going to a dermatologist? Read on to find out!

Use a gentle cleanser:

Due to increased sweating and loss of water, the skin can be dehydrated in the summer. Using harsh cleansers on top of it can thus exacerbate this dryness. Try finding a mild and gentle cleanser that suits your skin to avoid dehydration and dullness.

A gentle cleanser can also rid the face of the excess sweat and dust collected during the summer heat. Use this cleanser at least twice a day, followed by other skincare, to lock this moisture in.

Exfoliate the dead cells away:

The sweat and heat can clog pores, and create dullness on the skin. As the dead cells pile on the top layer of skin, there is visible discolouration. The simple solution is to use a gentle exfoliator that will remove the dead cells, and unclog the pores. Be sure to use a gentle scrub that will not be so harsh for your skin.

Use a toner with vitamin c:

Vitamin C has a brightening effect on the skin. Follow the cleansing with a toner, preferably with vitamin C to combat the dullness. A toner can provide instant glow and hydration. A bright complexion means that you can go out the door with less makeup, as an extra layer is just not suitable in this heat.

Try getting a good face mist toner that you can use on the go as well. Just take it out of the bag, and spritz it on yourself whenever you feel the heat getting to you.

Use a mask:

Throw on a mask for ten to fifteen minutes before you go out the door. A good mask can help decongest and de-stress the skin, and also provide antioxidants to reverse sun damage. You can do this step after cleansing and toning so that the nutrients penetrate deep in the skin. It does not necessarily have to be a store-bought mask, you can simply use turmeric or chick-pea with oil to make a good, hydrating mask.

Sunscreen:

Even though sunscreen should be part of skincare all year round, but during summers this step is even more vital. Summers in Pakistan are very harsh, and sun protection, therefore, should be top notch. Use a non-comedogenic sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

There are several good brands out there that offer lightweight sunscreens that don’t clog pores and don’t leave a white cast on the skin. Don’t forget to reapply every four hours, and if you can avoid the sun from 11 am to 2 pm.

If you need a more meticulous skin care regimen, tailored specifically for your skin type, then reach out to a qualified dermatologist.
