5 Simple Tips to Maintain Sexual Health

According to sexologists, sexual health is also an essential factor for a healthy life but unfortunately it is often ignored. An active and healthy sex life is not only a biological need, it also has other countless benefits. Sexually active people enjoy lower stress levels. Sex has also been linked with lower blood pressure levels.

Sexual health experts at oladoc, say that a healthy sexual life can boost immunity, improve sleep cycle and can even help in pain management. It is thus necessary to maintain sexual health. Here are five tips to do so.

1- Balanced Diet

Sex is a physical activity. It is thus crucial to be physically healthy for an active sex life. Diet is the main factor that determines physical health. Eating foods that give proper nutrition is essential for sound health. A diet which has a balanced proportion of carbs, protein and fats is the key to a healthy body and ultimately a healthy sex life.

Complex fats and foods high in sodium should be avoided generally. These foods can cause conditions like hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. Both of these conditions have been linked with erectile dysfunction in men and low libido in women.

Since ED has been linked to heart disease caused by high blood pressure; when plaque builds up in your arteries, it reduces blood flow to your heart and your penis, knowing how to get and maintain an erection in such situations is crucial. There are lots of options when it comes to dealing with ED, it’s up to you to decide where you start and which treatment and changes in your lifestyle make the most sense for you.

2- Exercise

As mentioned earlier, physical health is the foundation upon which sexual health stands. Exercise is the second most important factor in maintaining a healthy body after diet.

Exercise keeps stress levels down because it releases chemicals called endorphins in the body. Endorphins relax muscles and promote sound sleep which in turn decrease stress levels. Lower levels of stress promote sexual desire and thus an active sex life can be maintained.

Exercise has also been found to be most effective for weight loss and maintenance. Obesity has been linked with diabetes and high blood pressure. Both these conditions have been known to reduce sex drive and performance. Exercise can thus help avoid obesity and consequently a poor sexual health.

3- Quit Smoking

Smoking is detrimental to sexual health as consumption of tobacco can lead to constricted blood vessels. When the blood vessels in the genital area are constricted, blood flow gets disturbed. A hindered blood flow towards the genital area means problems in erection for men. For women, this means lack of lubrication which can make sex painful and unenjoyable.

Smoking should thus be avoided in order to maintain healthy frequency of sexual activity.

4- Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol consumption should also be avoided as it creates sexual problems similar to smoking. If consumed in large quantities, alcohol can cause short lived erections in men. In women, it can hinder orgasm as it can become difficult to become aroused after alcohol consumption.

5- Focus On Your Mental Health

Mental health issues such as depression can seriously decrease a person’s sex drive. Depression itself numbs one physically and mentally thus diminishing the desire to have sex. It is important to get treatment for depression in order to maintain sexual health.

The medications used to treat depression have also been linked with lower sex drives. Talk therapy with top psychologists can thus be a useful alternative to medication.

If you or your partner is facing a decreased sex drive, you should visit a sexologist as soon as possible.
