Even though we are always looking for new ways to keep our skin firm and glowing, not all strategies work. In fact, some of them can be harmful. The demand for anti-aging products is rising to fight the signs of aging caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Make sure that the anti-aging skin care strategies you use are safe. Here are some anti-aging myths you should not follow:
1- Expensive Products Are More Effective:
Even though some skin care products are worth splurging on, a hefty price tag doesn’t always translate into better quality. Although you might think that luxury skincare products are a better investment than their drugstore counterparts, it might not always be true. An expensive product isn’t necessarily more effective or of better quality ingredients. There are some really good drugstore products on the market that give great results and will also allow you to stay on your budget. Be sure to look at the type and concentration of ingredients in a product before buying it.
2- Buying Skincare Products Based on Your Age:
Some products claim to have been designed for a specific age group. However, age is not equivalent to skin type, and there is no logic behind buying skincare products according to your age. Basically, an older person can have the same skin type and skin conditions as someone younger. Dry skin or oily skin doesn’t miraculously go away with age. Always choose skincare products according to your skin type and concerns.
3- Smiling Causes Wrinkles:
Some people believe that an expressionless face can help prevent wrinkles. Even though expressive motions do cause lines to form, it is almost impossible to not have any expression. Do not hold back your happiness as happiness itself is an anti-aging remedy. The actual reasons for the wrinkles around your mouth isn’t your smile, its your skin losing elasticity. This is caused by a large number of factors, some of which you cannot control such as your genetic makeup. However, you can still take precautions such as staying hydrated and protecting yourself from ultraviolet radiation.
4- Anti-aging Products Are Quick to Work:
If you expect anti-aging products to work overnight, you will probably always be disappointed. Skin care products usually take 4 to 8 weeks to deliver results. You should wait at least two months before expecting a noticeable change in your skin after starting a new product and even then it may not deliver the results you are expecting. Anti-aging skin care products will often make incredibly exxagerated claims about what they can do, so its best to temper your expectations with what is and is not possible.
5- Sunscreen Can Be Skipped:
You might think that you need sunscreen only when it’s sunny outside, but the truth is you need it even when it’s cloudy. Even exposure for a mere 10 to 15 minutes a day can cause skin damage and accelerate the aging process. Make sure to have sunscreen every day, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m, regardless of the weather. Ultraviolet radiation is one of the biggest preventable causes of skin damage so it is best to add sunscreen to your daily skin care routine, even days you don’t intend to leave the house. Using facial moisturizer with built in sun protection is a great way to do this.
6- Facial Excercises Can Prevent Wrinkles:
There are a lot of articles circulating around the internet about facial excercises that will supposedly prevent your face from aging. Unfortunately none of these claims are true, especially since there are no concrete studies on the subject. Experts claim that even if these excercises do have some impact, it will likely be too small and subtle for anyone to really notice, some even claim they harm your skin instead of help. You are much better off using other products or techniques instead of these excercises.
7- Retinol Should Be Used Every Day:
Even though retinal is great for helping your skin shed dead skin cells, going overboard with it can do more harm than good. Retinal should also be avoided during the summer as it makes your skin more vulnerable to sun damage. Using retinol every day will also make it less effective as it works best in small doses. In higher doses it can actually hurt your skin and is regarded as a mildly risky ingredient for anti-aging skin care. It is always best to consult a professional dermatologist before using ingredients that come with some risk.
