Common Orthopedic Disorders: Q And A With Dr. M. Wajid

An orthopedic surgeon is trained to deal with patients having common orthopedic disorders of joints, bones, ligaments, tendons and filaments. Q.1: What diseases are treated by orthopedic surgeons?

Orthopedic surgeons mostly deal with joint-related complications and disorders, the usual target areas of these complications are shoulders and knees. Also, age-related issues such as general pain and weakness of joints is treated by orthopedics. Sports injuries, for example, football injuries are dealt with by orthopedics. 

Q.2: What are common orthopedic problems in Pakistan?

A common complaint of many people in Pakistan is knee pain, difficulty bending and walking, frozen shoulder, posture-related issues causing back pain etcetera. These complications hamper day to day activities of the patient and affect their quality of life.

A proper examination of the patient is done including past history; X-rays are done to rule in and rule out other diseases. In case X-rays are not done, and an MRI scan is done for further certainty. 

Q.3: What are the latest advancements in this field?

Thankfully, recent advancements in the medical field have expanded the scope of orthopedic surgeries. Keyhole surgeries are among the most popular surgeries performed today, this is effective in case of joint replacements. Minimal procedures are also effective now due to recent developments; the use of injections and medications is employed to eliminate the issue. Moreover, physiotherapy has also served as a source of relief to many patients.  

Q.4: What are the common treatment options?

If the condition of patient is bad and other treatments are not acting as a relief, then as a last resort surgery is offered. This is effective and extremely safe, the surgery is performed in accordance with internationally acceptable standards.

Surgery is mostly used in cases of shoulder and knee complications and ACL reconstruction in sports injuries when the knee ligament breaks. Frozen shoulder and shoulder fractures are also effectively countered with minimally invasive keyhole surgery. 

Q.5: Tell us a little about keyhole surgery?

A button-sized hole, up to 5 mm in size is made. Due to its small size, a number of side effects are eliminated. The patient experiences less bleeding and pain, the chances of developing an infection are significantly reduced. This is especially beneficial to diabetic patients because infections can prove detrimental to their condition.

Moreover, the recovery time period is relatively quicker since there are no stitches. The patient can resume their day to day activities within a day or two. Thankfully, there are no post-operative side effects and 99.9% surgeries are successful.
