Getting Rid Of Kidney Stones: How To Treat Them Effectively?

Kidney stone formation is a modern day medical phenomenon which affects a large percentage of the world population. That is, almost 1 in 20 individuals will develop kidney stones at least once in their lifetime. Kidney stones are extremely painful and, unlike most conditions, have a high rate of recurrence if not treated properly. The following points might help you in treating kidney stones and preventing them from reforming:

1- Appropriate Hydration:
According to The Institute of Medicine, the recommended amount of daily fluid intake for women is 2.2 liters and 3 liters for men. Appropriate fluid intake-especially water- can flush out the digestive system, making it easier for the stones to pass and prevent further stones from forming. Light yellow or clear urine is a sign of positive fluid intake.

2- Pain-Relief Medication:
Passing out kidney stones is an excruciating process which usually requires medication ranging from common painkillers like ‘ibuprofen’ to special prescription medicines or ‘alpha blockers’ which aid in relatively efficient and painless passing by relaxing the ureter muscles.

3- ESWL:
Used for stones under 2 cm, Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy focuses sound waves via a ‘lithotripter’ onto the exact location of the stone, breaking it down into smaller fragments to be passed via urine. This procedure lasts between 45-60 minutes, causes moderate pain and blood in urine. Bruising on the back or abdomen and bleeding around the kidneys are also possible side effects.

4- Ureteroscopy:
Small stones in the ureter or kidney are removed or broken into small pieces using special tools after locating the stones by a thin camera-equipped lighted tube or ‘ureteroscope’ which is passed into the ureter via the urethra and bladder.

5- Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy:
Large Kidney stones are removed using telescopes and surgical tools by making an incision in the back in the event that EWSL is unsuccessful. It requires full-body anaesthesia and a 2-day hospital recuperation time.
