Importance Of Oral Health: Q And A With Dr. Ali Saeed Sethi

Good oral health and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease—and can help you keep your teeth as you get older.

Dr. Ali Saeed Sethi is an endodontist in Lahore who practices at Dental Square Clinic. He also has a masters degree in endodontics and provides superior dental expertise across the board.

In this session with Oladoc, he talks about the importance of dental health for our overall health, in particular, tooth decay and its causes, treatments, and prevention.

Q.1. How does oral health affect your overall health?

Well, let’s look at it this way, if your oral hygiene is not upto the mark, then your overall health will definitely suffer as you take in your food through the mouth. If your mouth has microbes, then they will travel from your mouth to your stomach. In addition, you might get heart-related concerns. You cannot stay medically fit if the food going down your body is unhygienic.

Q.2. What are the most common dental problems?

The most common dental problem is dental caries which is also known as tooth decay. The second most common problem is halitosis or bad breath. Halitosis or bad breath is something that affects your social circle as well. In addition, there are many gum diseases as well that may affect your oral health.

Q.3. What is the link between oral and digestive problems?

Digestive health and oral health are quite closely related. Let’s look at the common problem of acidity. What happens is that the acid from the stomach reaches your oral cavity and starts eroding your teeth. This weakens your teeth and causes sensitivity. In addition, the medication that you take for oral health also causes teeth erosion.

Q.4. What is tooth decay and how is it developed?

You must have seen that the inner side of teeth contains plaque. Plaque has microbes that erode the surface of your teeth. That’s when the tooth decay starts.

Q.5. How do you get rid of tooth decay?

When the cavity forms, one starts to feel sensitivity. But this cavity starts to grow. Ultimately, this cavity disrupts the pulp in the teeth and causes pain. This is the time when the patient comes to the dentist for treatment. Sadly, once pain occurs, the last line of treatment is a root canal in which we kill the teeth roots.
