Laparoscopic Surgery And Its Types: Q And A With Dr. Imran Indrabi

Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical diagnostic procedure done to examine organs inside the abdomen and eliminate any complications. This is a relatively new surgical procedure resulting in minimal side effects, pain and recovery period for the patient. It is considered the safest method due to minimal risk factors involved.

Dr. Imran Andrabi is a general and laparoscopic surgeon in Lahore. In this interview, he helped us understand the basics of laparoscopic surgery and why it’s needed. In addition, the discussion also covered a number of areas like ganglion cyst, diabetic foot, salivary glands infection and surgery, and general hernia problems.

Q.1: What is general surgery?

Basically, patients suffering from any sort of trauma such as accidents, bullets or knife wounds are brought to us. Patients having no emergency but suffering from diseases are also brought, these are called elective cases. These patients are mostly suffering from stones in the gall bladder, complications related to breasts, thyroid, complications in salivary glands, cancer and diabetes etcetera. A very small hole is made on the abdomen, this procedure causes minimal pain and bleeding, the infection rate is also very low.

Q.2: What are the different types of Laparoscopic surgery?

The most common type is the removal of gall bladder due to stones; gall bladder is the factory that produces stones. This is done to prevent further harm and pain to the patient. Another commonly performed procedure is the removal of appendix; if appendix is not timely operated it can rupture and spread poison throughout the stomach. With the help of very small scars, these complications are eliminated.

Q.3: Tell us a little about cancer?

In cancer, the body cells replicate themselves at such a rate that they harm the organs and tissues around them. There are several different types of cancer, for example blood, skin and breast. All over the world, this is now considered as a chronic disease because if timely diagnosed it can be recovered from. Diagnostic tests, MRI, CT scan and several other tests are done to pinpoint the exact organ being affected and then a treatment is devised according to each patient.

Q.4: What is breast cancer?

There are two types of guilty tumours that form in the breasts: the benign ones are not harmful but the lump can be cancerous. If the patient feels a lump on their breast or experiences any form of discharge from nipples, a consultant should be referred to immediately. The consultant takes into account patient’s history and tests such as ultrasound and mammograms are done to rule out other possibilities. Time is the most important factor; early diagnosis can lead to a full recovery.

Q.5: What is fissure?

Patients who do not take proper diet and the required amount of water intake form a fissure at the anus. Fissures are frequently common; they are characterized by pain, difficulty in urination and bleeding. The treatment can range from home remedies, over the counter drugs to surgical procedures in extreme situations.
