Pcos Treatment: Q And A With Dr. Rubina Zaib

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs.

Dr. Rubina Zaib is a Gynecologist in Lahore. In her session with oladoc, she raises awareness about a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. She discusses the early symptoms, causes and also treatment of the disease. However, with regard to the treatment, she discusses the important lifestyle modifications necessary for its treatment.

Q.1. What are the common gynaecological problems of women in Pakistan?

Women have a multitude of gyne problems, ranging from anaemia, nutritional deficiencies, menstrual irregularities and PCOS. PCOS refers to the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Its called a syndrome because it’s a multitude of diseases. We call PCOS a metabolic disorder as it doesn’t just affect the reproductive system but also disrupts your cholesterol levels, insulin levels and hormonal levels.

Q.2. What are the causes of irregular periods?

Well, the time of menstruation, whether late or early is inherited via the mother’s own menstruation cycle. However, if the periods are unusually early (before 9 years of age) or late, then they should definitely consult a gynecologist.

I would also like to reiterate the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle in the balanced hormonal makeup of a woman. A sedentary lifestyle with unhealthy food habits can push you closer to PCOS or other hormonal or menstrual irregularities.

Q.3. What is antenatal care in Pregnancy?

According to the World Health Organisation, a woman who is pregnant must be taken to the hospital at least 5 times during her pregnancy. This is really important to ensure that the pregnancy is taking a normal route.

Q.4. What are the reasons behind high-risk pregnancy?

Women who don’t make antenatal visits to the doctor are much more likely to have a high-risk pregnancy. I would like to tell about certain high-risk pregnancy conditions and these women must visit their gynaecologists routinely.

Women who are having their first child or 5th child must see a gynecologist frequently. Women who have had a long history of infertility or have had a C-section before must have antenatal visits as well. In addition, if you have any pressing health concerns such as heart problems, high blood pressure, excessive nausea, visit your healthcare professional at your earliest.

Q.5. Would you like to give any suggestions to our viewers?

Yes, Ofocurse, my suggestion to everyone, especially women is to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle instead of a sedentary one. Make small steps and start walking or jogging, eat healthily and avoid junk food.
