What Experts Say
Spasfon contains two active agents: Phloroglucinol and Trimethylphloroglucinol. Together, they act as musculotropic antispasmodics, working directly on smooth muscle tissue rather than through the nervous system. This mechanism makes Spasfon well suited for spasmodic pain where neurological pathways are not the primary cause.
Phloroglucinol works by inhibiting catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), an enzyme involved in muscle contraction signaling. By blocking this enzyme, it reduces the intensity and frequency of smooth muscle spasms. The combination with Trimethylphloroglucinol enhances and prolongs this antispasmodic effect.
Because Spasfon does not block cholinergic receptors, it avoids the systemic side effects common to anticholinergic antispasmodics. Clinicians often prefer it for patients who are elderly or sensitive to anticholinergic effects.
