5 Best Tips for Highly Sensitive People

Highly sensitive people are sometimes perceived as weak and broken, but being highly sensitive is neither a disorder nor a flaw. It is just an innate trait. Not all highly sensitive people (HSPs) are alike, but they have one thing in common: they have a sensitive nervous system so they are quick to get overwhelmed as it is difficult for them to filter out stimuli.

According to research, around 20 percent of the population has nervous systems which process stimuli intensely. That’s why highly sensitive people feel deeply and think deeply. Here are some psychiatric-approved tips for highly sensitive people:

1- Don’t Expect Anyone Or Anything To Fix You:

Sensitivity is not a medical disorder, it is a temperament trait. Some sensitive people are more likely to have sensitivities to chemicals, foods, and medication, and allergies. They are also more susceptible to overstimulation so they get stressed out easily.

This sometimes leads to other health issues. However, sensitivity itself is not an ailment that needs fixing. It is important to realize that just because you are sensitive, it does not mean you are broken or you need a solution to fix your flaws.

2- Get more sleep:

Although adequate sleep is important for everyone, highly sensitive people should make sure that they do not miss eight hours of sleep for more than two consecutive nights. HSP need more sleep because their nervous system is always on overdrive and they are more likely to go through emotional burnout.

Sleep helps you de-stress and revitalizes your nervous system so that you do not feel worn-out the next day. Shut down all your gadgets an hour before your bedtime and do something relaxing instead such as reading a book.

3- Maintain A Healthy Diet:

Extreme hunger is not good for highly sensitive people as it can be disruptive to mood. To keep your edgy nerves in control, try to keep your blood sugar levels steady by adopting a healthy and well-balanced diet that includes meals and snacks. You may also take fish oil as it is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and is good for the brain.

4- Create A Safe Place For Yourself:

If you live with family and friends, create a calming, safe place for yourself where you can go when you want solitude. This could be your terrace, lawn, a study, or even a calming shower. This will help you relax and unwind.

5- Be Receptive Of The Signals:

Be in sync with your body and emotions all day. When you notice that you are starting to feel overwhelmed, take some time out to recharge. Even a five-minute walk can do the trick. This will prevent the negative feelings from snowballing.

If you feel that your sensitive nature is affecting your life more than it’s acceptable, it might be time to get help from a professional.
