Although coffee offers some benefits, it is high in caffeine, which is a stimulant that cannot only disrupt sleep but also result in other problems. Consumption of coffee is, therefore, a controversial topic and nutritionists are divided on this topic. If you find it difficult to quit coffee, you might want to play it safe by restricting your consumption of the caffeinated drink.
All individuals metabolize coffee differently, so it’s difficult to recommend a safe dose. However, not going above one cup is recommended. Here are some reasons why you should avoid excess consumption of coffee:

According to a study conducted by Mayo Clinic, men who consumed more than 8 Fl.oz. cups of coffee every day had a 21 percent increase in all-cause mortality.
However, men who drank this much coffee also said that they have a poor fitness and are more likely to smoke more often. So, the study has a few discrepancies, but that is not enough to counter the fact that moderation is key.
Over consumption of coffee can lead to heart palpitations, anxiety, jitteriness, and even panic attacks. If you think you are sensitive to caffeine and it overstimulates you, it might be a good idea to avoid coffee or to limit your consumption to one cup. Apart from that, coffee can also disrupt sleep and impact sleep quality. So, if you do drink coffee, try not to have it after 4:00 p.m.
This especially applies to those who suffer from hypertension and do not usually consume caffeine. According to a study, the blood pressure of people with hypertension rises 2 to 3 hours after the consumption of 250 mg of caffeine (or two cups).
Another study has reported similar results from a much smaller dose. All the participants experienced a significant rise in blood pressure, and the effect was more pronounced in people who didn’t normally drink tea and coffee.
Coffee can mess with normal drug metabolism and may also affect detoxification in the liver, which makes it difficult for the body to regulate the routine detoxification process in the liver. Apart from that, coffee intake can interfere with certain medications like the thyroid medicine levothyroxine and it can also affect the absorption of tricyclic antidepressants.
Excess consumption of coffee may also cause you to urinate more and lead to the excretion of important minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium. An electrolyte imbalance may lead to serious systemic complications.
