Common Dental Problems: Q And A With Dr. Munaaf Hashim

Dr. Munaaf Hashim is a dental surgeon in Islamabad. He is the owner of Munaaf dental practice. He provides solutions to many common dental problems related to cosmetic, rehabilitation and surgery.

He sat down with oladoc to discuss various dental problems and their advanced treatments available in Pakistan. Apart from the medical treatments, he also discusses the effectiveness of home remedies for teeth whitening. If you’re concerned about your dental health, this is a must-watch for you.

Q.1. What are the most dental problems in Pakistan?

The most common dental problem is gum disease. Most people in Pakistan have no idea how significantly damaging it is to our body. The bacteria that cause gum disease is the same bacteria that causes heart diseases, diabetes and has even been related to Alzheimer’s now.

Q.2. Does Pakistan have advanced dental treatment solutions?

Well, I believe that dentistry in Pakistan is just as advanced as anywhere else in the world. We are following all international protocols and equipment that is used in this field. We are also performing all procedures that are being conducted all around the world.

Q.3. Are home remedies effective for teeth?

We do have a problem with using home remedies for dental problems. For example, using miswak in place of a toothbrush is considered better which is totally wrong. I believe that if the Prophet (S.A.W) had a toothbrush back in those times, he would have used exactly that.

Along the same line, people use baking soda on their teeth to whiten it which is very harmful. It tends to demineralise your tooth structure and makes them quite weak and sensitive. There are some others such as massaging your teeth with haldi or turmeric. That actually stains your teeth. So, please have faith in research and knowledge and follow them.

Q.4. Does food affect our oral health?

Well, as far as food intake is concerned, no there is no food that is bad for teeth. However, if you don’t clean your teeth, then every food is bad! High carb foods such as sugars would be more damaging to your teeth if you don’t keep them clean. Sugar is the food source for bacteria that decays the teeth. Similarly, food fibres stuck between the teeth may cause swollen gums. The problem doesn’t lie with the foo, it lies in the lack of cleanliness.

Q.5. Would you like to give any message to your viewers?

My message to the people of Pakistan would be to take their oral health quite seriously. The mouth is the dirtiest part of the body and has the maximum bacteria. If we don’t take care of our oral hygiene we end up causing a lot more damage to our body.
