Risks and warnings
- Blood clot history: Patients with a past or current history of thrombosis must not use Primolut N tablet. Norethisterone can increase the risk of blood clots in susceptible individuals.
- Liver disease: Primolut N tablet is contraindicated in active liver disease. Liver function should be assessed before starting this medicine in patients with any liver history.
- Depression: Norethisterone may worsen existing depression or trigger mood changes. Patients with a history of depression should use this medicine only under close medical supervision.
- Diabetes: Primolut N tablet may affect glucose tolerance. Patients with diabetes should monitor blood sugar levels carefully during treatment.
- Cardiovascular disease: Patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, or elevated cholesterol require medical supervision before starting Primolut N tablet.
- Migraine: Primolut N tablet should be used with caution in patients prone to severe migraines. Any new or worsening migraines during treatment should be reported to a doctor immediately.
- Smoking: Smoking significantly increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects when combined with hormonal medicines. Patients who smoke should inform their doctor before use.
- Kidney disease: Primolut N tablet may cause fluid retention. Patients with kidney problems should use this medicine under medical supervision.
- Thyroid function tests: Norethisterone may interfere with certain thyroid and liver function test results. Inform your doctor or laboratory about this medicine before any blood tests.
- Driving and machinery: Primolut N tablet may cause dizziness or blurred vision in some patients. Caution is advised when driving or operating heavy equipment.
- Elderly patients: This medicine is generally not indicated for postmenopausal women outside of hormone replacement therapy settings. A doctor's guidance is essential.
How to use Primolut-N Tablet?
- Irregular or heavy periods: One 5mg tablet, two to three times daily from day 5 to day 25 of the cycle.
- Endometriosis: Two 5mg tablets daily, taken continuously as directed by a gynaecologist.
- PMS: One 5mg tablet twice daily, from day 19 to day 26 of the cycle.
- Delaying menstruation: One 5mg tablet three times daily, starting 3 days before the expected period date.
- Swallow Primolut N tablet whole with a full glass of water, at the same time each day.
- Primolut N tablet can be taken with or without food.
- Never stop Primolut N tablet suddenly; always follow the doctor's guidance on completing the course.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or for girls who have not yet started their periods.
Primolut N Tablet Side Effects
- Headache or migraine
- Nausea or stomach discomfort
- Breast tenderness or swelling
- Irregular spotting or breakthrough bleeding between periods
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Mood changes, including low mood or irritability
- Bloating or fluid retention
- Mild weight gain
- Sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood (may indicate a blood clot in the lungs)
- Swelling, redness, or pain in one leg (may indicate deep vein thrombosis)
- Sudden severe headache, vision disturbance, or weakness on one side of the body (may indicate stroke)
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or upper abdominal pain (signs of liver problems)
- Severe depression or thoughts of self-harm
- Sudden loss of vision or changes in eyesight
Drug Interactions
- Rifampicin and rifabutin (antibiotics used for tuberculosis) reduce the effectiveness of norethisterone by speeding up its breakdown in the liver. A dose adjustment may be needed.
- Phenytoin and carbamazepine (anti-epileptic medicines) lower norethisterone levels in the blood, reducing its effectiveness.
- Antiretroviral medicines used in HIV treatment may reduce the contraceptive effectiveness of norethisterone-containing products.
- Corticosteroids combined with Primolut N tablet may increase the risk of fluid retention and other hormonal side effects.
- Anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin may have altered clotting effects when combined with norethisterone. Regular monitoring of clotting levels is required.
- St. John's Wort (a herbal supplement) may reduce norethisterone levels in the body. Avoid concurrent use.
- Other hormonal medicines should not be combined with the Primolut N tablet without specific medical guidance, as hormonal imbalances may result.
Storage Conditions
- Store Primolut N tablet at room temperature, below 25°C.
- Keep the medicine away from direct sunlight, moisture, and excess heat.
- Do not store in the bathroom or near a kitchen sink.
- Keep Primolut N tablet out of the reach of children and pets.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the strip or carton.
