Therapy or Medication: What’s the Best Way to Treat Mental Illness?

Sometimes we stand at a point in our lives where everything just becomes overwhelming. We look forward and there is a dead end, and we look forward and we see nothing but the darkness consuming everything in front of us. When life brings crises, you have two choices; either to let the chaos consume you or stay peaceful when facing rough times. It can be extremely hard, but it, in the end, it is totally worth it. Chaos brings nothing but destruction while staying calm can help you through the rough times by giving you valuable life lessons.

Breaking the Stigma:

Mental health is still a taboo in our society and so many stigmas are still attached to it. So many people are unable to get help because asking help for a mental illness is interpreted as a weakness in our society. It is time we get over the stigma and make it easier for people who are suffering, by not shaming people for undergoing therapy or taking medication and by providing them support.

Therapy or Medication?

It is one of the questions that everybody, who is struggling, is concerned about. The answer totally depends on a couple of factors.

1- The intensity of Your Problem:

If you think it is day to day stress, or issues you think can be sorted out, then therapy might be a better option. However, if you think that your problem is bigger than that and there are unresolved conflicts of your past affecting your present and making your dysfunctional then maybe it is time that you consider getting a prescription of happy pills.

2- Seek Professional Advice:

Whatever your problem is, whether it is insomnia, anxiety or depression, it is necessary to visit a mental health professional for a proper diagnosis. Your therapist would refer you to a psychiatrist if he/she/they deem it suitable. Don’t hesitate to visit a mental health professional, it is their job to assist and guide you. You can also opt for online therapy if you wish to receive mental health support remotely.

Understanding the Importance of Both:

Both medication and therapy are important. Medication without therapy is pretty useless. Mental illnesses are more difficult to cure/manage than the physical ailment. Every individual is unique and no two people think exactly the same

Therapy is a Must:

It is important to make sure you are seeking proper therapy along with your medication because the medication is not the long-term solution. It might be a temporary and a quick fix but it isn’t something you should be depending on for the rest of your life.

There Are Some Things that Therapy Can’t Fix:

Some of the symptoms of mental disorders cannot be fixed merely by therapy, this is where medication plays a vital role. Mental health problems like anxiety attacks, catalepsy, and other serious problems cannot be managed by mere therapy. Medication is used to keep in control the physical and neurological responses to a mental illness.

Best Fix is a Combination of Both:

Both medication and therapy are crucial and are often used as a combination of both when it comes to treating a mental illness. Just remember that it is okay to ask for help and it is totally okay to take medication and/or therapy to cope with your mental health problems.
