Uric Acid Symptoms in Men and Women

Many people in Pakistan wake up at night with sudden pain in their toes or ankles. The joint looks red and swollen. Moving it feels impossible.

This is one of the most common signs of high uric acid in the blood. Most people have never heard of uric acid until this moment.

Understanding what uric acid does, why it rises, and how to treat it can save you from months of pain and joint damage.

What Are Uric Acid Symptoms?

Uric acid is a waste product the body makes when it breaks down certain foods. Normally, the kidneys remove it from the body in urine.

When too much builds up, it forms tiny, sharp crystals inside the joints.

These crystals cause pain, swelling, and redness. The big toe, ankle, and knee are the most commonly affected joints.

Uric Acid Symptoms in Males

Men are more likely to have high uric acid than women. Most men notice symptoms between the ages of 30 and 50.

  1. Joint Pain and Gout Attacks

The most common sign in men is a gout attack. This is a sudden burst of intense pain in one joint, usually the big toe.

The pain starts at night in most cases. It can be severe that even a bedsheet touching the toe hurts.

  1. Hard Lumps Near Joints

Without treatment, uric acid crystals collect under the skin over time. They form small, hard lumps called tophi.

These lumps appear most often near the fingers, elbows, and ears. They are a sign that your uric acid has been high for a long time.

  1. Kidney Stones

High uric acid can also lead to kidney stones in men. The main signs are sharp pain in the back or side, blood in the urine, and pain while urinating.

These symptoms can resemble a urinary infection. A blood test for uric acid helps find the real cause.

Uric Acid Symptoms in Females

Women’s bodies handle uric acid well before menopause. After menopause, uric acid levels can rise and cause problems.

  1. Joint Pain in Fingers and Wrists

In women, high uric acid often causes pain in the fingers, wrists, and knees. The big toe is less commonly affected.

This can look a lot like arthritis. Many women are told they have arthritis before a uric acid test gives the correct answer.

  1. Swelling and Morning Stiffness

Swollen fingers and stiff joints in the morning are common in women with high uric acid. The joints may feel warm when touched.

These symptoms often get worse after eating certain foods or during times of stress.

  1. No Symptoms at All

Many women with high uric acid feel completely fine. The problem only shows up in a routine blood test.

Even without pain, untreated high uric acid can slowly damage the kidneys and affect heart health over time.

What Causes High Uric Acid?

The body makes uric acid when it digests foods that contain purines. Purines are natural substances found in many common foods.

When the body makes too much uric acid, or the kidneys cannot remove enough of it, the level in the blood rises.

Common causes of uric acid include:

  • Red meat and organ meats: Beef, mutton, liver, and kidney are very high in purines.
  • Seafood: Sardines, mackerel, and shrimp raise uric acid levels.
  • Sugary drinks: Cold drinks and juices with added sugar are a major cause in Pakistan.
  • Family history: Uric acid problems often run in families.
  • Being overweight: Extra body weight makes it harder for the kidneys to remove uric acid.
  • Some medicines: Certain blood pressure tablets and water tablets can raise uric acid.
  • Not drinking enough water: Low water intake makes uric acid more concentrated in the blood.

How Is Uric Acid Checked in Pakistan?

A simple blood test called a serum uric acid test measures the level in the blood. This test is widely available at labs across Pakistan.

Normal levels are:

  • Men: 3.4 to 7.0 mg/dL
  • Women: 2.4 to 6.0 mg/dL

A reading above these numbers means the level is too high.

One high result does not always mean treatment is needed right away. The doctor will look at symptoms and overall health before deciding.

Verified rheumatologists and internal medicine specialists are available for consultation in Lahore and other major cities across Pakistan.

Treatment for High Uric Acid

Treatment works in two steps. The first step stops the pain during an attack. The second step keeps uric acid low, so attacks do not come back.

Medicines for Pain During an Attack

  • Ibuprofen or naproxen: These common pain medicines reduce swelling and pain quickly.
  • Colchicine: A medicine made specifically for gout. It works best when taken at the very start of an attack.
  • Steroid tablets: Used when the other medicines are not suitable, such as in patients with kidney or stomach problems.

Medicines to Keep Uric Acid Low

  • Allopurinol: The most common long-term medicine in Pakistan. It reduces how much uric acid the body makes. The dose is adjusted based on kidney health.
  • Febuxostat: An option for people who cannot take allopurinol.
  • Probenecid: Helps the kidneys remove more uric acid. Not used in patients with kidney stones.

A doctor will recommend long-term medicine if attacks happen more than twice a year, if tophi are visible, or kidneys are affected.

Lifestyle Changes That Help

Medicine works better alongside simple lifestyle changes. Drinking more water, losing extra weight, and eating less red meat all help bring uric acid down.

Uric Acid Diet

What you eat every day has a direct effect on uric acid levels.

Foods to Avoid in Uric Acid

  • Beef, mutton, brain, liver, and kidney
  • Sardines, mackerel, and shrimp
  • Sugary cold drinks and packaged juices
  • Alcohol, especially beer

Foods That Help Lower Uric Acid

  • Dahi, lassi, and plain low-fat milk
  • Cherries and berries
  • Lentils and vegetables in normal amounts
  • Plenty of water, at least 8 to 10 glasses a day

The Takeaway

High uric acid is common, painful, and easy to miss in its early stages. A simple blood test can catch it before it causes lasting damage.

With the right medicine, a few food changes, and enough water every day, uric acid levels can stay under control.

FAQs

What are the first signs of high uric acid?

Sudden pain, swelling, and redness in a joint, most often the big toe or ankle, are the first signs. The pain usually starts at night.

What is the normal uric acid level in Pakistan?

The normal level is 3.4 to 7.0 mg/dL for men and 2.4 to 6.0 mg/dL for women. A reading above this range is considered high.

Can women get high uric acid symptoms?

High uric acid in women most often causes pain in the fingers, wrists, and knees. Many women have high levels without any pain at all.

Which foods raise uric acid the most?

Red meat, organ meats, seafood, and sugary cold drinks are the biggest causes of high uric acid, especially in a Pakistani diet.

Is high uric acid permanent?

High uric acid is not curable, but it is very manageable. The right medicine and diet changes keep levels normal and prevent attacks.

How long does a gout attack last?

Without treatment, a gout attack lasts between 3 and 10 days. With medicine started early, the pain usually settles within 2 to 3 days.
