What Is Double Cleansing And Why Is It Important In Your Skincare Routine?

A great technique, introduced as part of skincare a few years back, was that of double cleansing. This technique took the beauty world by the storm, because of its impact on eradicating the skin issues through simple cleansing. This technique is based on Korean skincare regimen;  top dermatologists in Korea say that if you get your cleansing step right, half your skin issues go away. Hence, Koreans lay great importance on thorough double cleansing of the face.

Just like any other Korean skincare step, cleansing is also emphasized to be ‘gentle’ so as not to strip the skin of its protective oils and retain the moisture in the skin as well. Throughout the day the facial skin faces polluted air, sweat and bacteria; therefore, at the end of the day cleansing the face rids the skin of all this buildup and prevents breakouts.

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing involves using a cleansing balm, oil or micellar water to first break down whatever is on the face, namely—makeup, SPF and sebum. This cleansing is to be followed by another water-based cleanser for a deeper clean, going into the pores and removing any impurities.

According to the dermatologists at Cadogan Clinic, this removes not only the bacteria and sweat but gently rids the buildup of old cells as well. When the dead skin cells over the top most layer of skin are removed, it encourages the newer cells from deeper layers to come to the surface, thus giving the skin a fresher look.

How to double cleanse?

The first step is to thoroughly get rid of the makeup. This can take some time, as you have to make sure that a cotton pad comes up completely clean. This is an essential step as makeup can settle deeper into the pores and if not removed thoroughly, it will slowly cause impurities to build up.

The next step entails a full-fledged water-based cleanse with lukewarm water, which will get into the pores and the deeper layers. For this step, a quick splash won’t do. Whether double cleansing or not, it is important to massage and rub the cleanser into the skin for a minute at least, says clinical facialist, Kate Kerr. This is reiterated by dermatologists who emphasize that pollution, toxins and makeup-up buildup can settle deeper into the skin; this step is, therefore, an additional one to make sure that healthy skin surfaces.

Moreover, only through deeper cleanse will the benefits of the serums and treatment creams you put on thereafter will be seen. More often than not, people spend a mere twenty seconds’ time cleansing their face, and this time is not enough for a proper massage of the cleanser.
