Eyes and Vision

4 Everyday Habits That Improve Vision

Some of the most common vision related problems such as dry eye disease, cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) can be prevented. And can save you a visit to one of the top eye specialists in Pakistan.

1-An Eye-Friendly Diet:

Like most other health-related issues, your diet plays an important role here as well. Nutrients such as lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and Vitamins C and E can prevent your vision from worsening as you age. Moreover, an eye-healthy diet can also be good for your overall health, and reduce your risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and diseases that can lead to vision problems.

Blueberries have been shown to keep age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) at bay, which often results in blindness in older people. Similarly, anthocyanosides found in bilberry can also safeguard the retina against macular degeneration. Other eye-friendly foods include the lutein-rich spinach and quercetin-rich red onions.

2-Realign Your Car Vents:

While you might be tempted to aim your car vents at your face when it’s too hot outside, the dry air that comes out of the air conditioner is very bad for your eyes as it sucks the moisture out. That’s why it is recommended that you aim the air vents away from your eyes. If you can’t do that, wear sunglasses as a protective measure. Dry eyes are not just annoying; they can ultimately lead to corneal abrasions and in extreme cases, even blindness.

3-Quit Smoking:

It turns out that smoking is bad for just about anything you can think of- your heart, your skin, and even your eyes. That’s why you might want to consider quitting the habit if you are concerned about your wellbeing. Compared to non-smokers, individuals who smoke are more at a risk of developing cataracts. Moreover, smokers are also more susceptible to age-related macular degeneration.

Apart from that, smokers are also more at a risk of getting uveitis, which is an inflammatory eye disease that may lead to complete vision loss. Similarly, smokers are more likely to experience dry eyes, which often lead to redness and itchiness. Pregnant ladies who smoke put their unborn babies at a risk for developing eye disorders.

4-Stay Physically Active:

Physical activity is not just good for your waistline; it can also be great for your eye health. Some chronic illnesses such as hypertension, heart disease, type II diabetes, and high cholesterol can negatively affect your vision by meddling with blood flow to the eyes. Moreover, obesity can also induce diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, which are two eye disorders that are mainly caused by unregulated diabetes and high blood pressure.

If you feel that you are experiencing vision-related problems, it is recommended that you visit an ophthalmologist.
