5 Foods That Can Slow Down Macular Degeneration

Even though top ophthalmologists in Pakistan have not discovered a way to prevent macular degeneration, some studies suggest that some steps can be taken to safeguard vision and lower the risk of developing macular degeneration.

This disease is hereditary and while you can’t change your genetic makeup, lifestyle changes such as improving diet, staying away from cigarettes, exercising, getting regular eye checkups, and taking antioxidant vision vitamins can slow down macular degeneration. Here are some foods that contain the  key nutrients required to keep your eyes in top working order:

1- Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fish is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids which are good for the photoreceptor cells of the retina. Apart from fishes such as sardines and salmon, spinach, walnuts, and Brussel sprouts are some good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

2- Zeaxanthin and lutein

Zeaxanthin and lutein, the two key carotenoids are abundantly present in the macular area of the retina and are said to improve eye health by filtering out blue wavelengths of light, which are harmful to the eyes. Since the human body doesn’t naturally produce these carotenoids, it is important to consume zeaxanthin and lutein-rich foods such as kale, collard greens, spinach, turnip greens, and eggs. These nutrients can also be taken in supplement form.

3- Foods High In Zinc

Zinc helps your body transport vitamin A from the liver to the retina. Vitamin A is required to produce the pigment melanin that protects the eye. Eye problems such as cataracts and poor night vision have been linked to a zinc deficiency and people at high risk for macular degeneration can prevent the condition from worsening b taking zinc and some other antioxidants. Some good sources of zinc include red meat, oysters, beans, poultry, and whole grains.

4- Antioxidant Rich Foods

Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E are great for your eyesight, in addition to being amazing for your overall health and well being. The body is put through more oxidative stress as we age and antioxidants can counter the harmful effects of oxidant chemicals. A research has shown that individuals at high risk of developing the disease curtailed the risk by upping their intake of zinc, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

Some good sources of vitamin E are broccoli, peppers, citrus, and strawberries. Best vitamin E sources include hazelnuts, peanuts, almonds, spinach, safflower seeds, and broccoli. Carrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, spinach, apricots, and cantaloupe are all good sources of beta-carotene.

5- Vitamin D

Vitamin D has antioxidants, anti-angiogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties, so it can provide protection against age-related diseases such as macular degeneration. Specifically, vitamin D may impede the growth of new blood vessels that are characteristic of wet AMD. Fatty fish such as cod, salmon, halibut, tuna; and eggs are good food sources of vitamin D.
