5 Habits That Can Reduce the Risk of Liver Disease

The liver is one of the most important organs of your body and that’s why it is important to maintain liver health. Your liver receives nearly 30 percent of the blood circulating in your body every minute to remove harmful toxins and store and distribute essential nutrients.

Some signs of poor liver health include skin problems such as psoriasis and acne, nutrient deficiencies, lower energy, greater fatigue, inability to concentrate, inflammation and itchiness, indigestion, and hormonal imbalances. Consult a nutritionist for an effective diet management plan.

However, this does not mean that you shouldn’t be mindful of the health of your liver unless you suspect a problem. Being proactive is also good and healthy habits can help dial down the risk of liver diseases. Here are some habits that can lower your risk of liver diseases:

1- Drinking Coffee:

While you might be on the fence about the benefits of drinking coffee, a lot of studies have shown that coffee consumption can prevent certain liver diseases. Coffee can help prevent fibrosis, a scar tissue that can damage the liver. Some studies have also shown that hepatitis C patients can benefit from one to four cups of coffee every day as it can help slow down the liver infection.

However, doctors still don’t know why coffee is so effective. That being said, people with certain health conditions, like healthy blood pressure, should steer clear of coffee.

2- Adopt The Mediterranean Diet:

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes healthy fats and proteins, and lower carbs. Healthy fats such as avocados, walnuts, and olive oil can help the liver perform well. Apart from that, you should try not go over your maintenance level calories to keep your liver in top shape. Weight loss, along with a diet that is nutrient-rich, can have an effect on metabolic syndrome which is linked to the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

3- Avoid Low-fat, High-sugar Diets:

Most low-fat foods contain unhealthy filler ingredients such as sugar to compensate for the lack of fat. The sugar is converted into fat by the liver and extra fat stores in the liver may lead to fatty liver disease. Try to avoid processed foods, particularly those that contain high-fructose corn syrup.

4- Increase Your Intake Of Antioxidant-rich Foods:

Oxidative stress can be harmful to the liver and you can remedy that by increasing your intake of antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries. These foods replace the natural antioxidants that the liver requires to detoxify foods and chemicals that people are exposed to. Moreover, antioxidants are also anti-inflammatory and may also increase liver enzyme activity.

5- Get Regular Exercise:

Being physically active can also be beneficial for your liver. Moreover, when you exercise regularly, you keep your weight in check and this can help prevent nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Just 150 minutes of physical activity every week can reduce the inflammation in the liver.
