Hirsutism is a condition of unwanted male-pattern hair growth in women. Hirsutism results in excessive amounts of dark, coarse hair on body areas where men typically grow hair — face, chest and back. This is something that can affect the mental, emotional and hormonal health of women so seeking hirsutism treatment is mandatory.
To seek hirsutism treatment, we invited top dermatologist, Dr. Nazia Shakeel. She is also a holder of a certificate from the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. She aims to provide the best skin treatment to her patients with the utmost dedication.
In this session with oladoc, she mostly talked about hirsutism in detail and elaborated on available treatment options in Pakistan.
Q.1. What is Hirsutism?
Well, Hirsutism refers to coarse, thick hair that grows on the face and body of some women. Excessive amounts of thick hair are seen in areas where men grow hair, such as the arms, face, back and chest. It obviously affects the confidence level of women.
Q.2. What is the cause of hirsutism?
Basically, there are many causes of hirsutism. Due to an increase in the male hormone, testosterone, hormonal imbalance occurs that causes hirsutism. Secondly, testosterone levels also surge during pregnancy.
Menopause can also cause hirsutism. As the estrogen levels increase, testosterone levels increase.
Obesity and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) can also trigger hirsutism. Genetics also play a role.
Q.3. How can we prevent hirsutism?
Well, we can’t really prevent hirsutism. Until hirsutism doesn’t occur, we can’t know about the internal hormonal imbalance. If a woman sees thick, coarse hair growing on their body, they must definitely see a doctor.
Q.4. What is the best treatment of hirsutism?
Many tests are required to seek out the real cause of hirsutism. These tests are done to know if there is any hormonal imbalance issue that is triggering it. We do ultrasounds, hormonal profiling, insulin test to diagnose the condition of which hirsutism is a side effect.
After diagnosing the hormonal imbalance, we prescribe medication. Moreover, laser treatments are also done to reduce the amount of hair growth.
However, patients with hormonal respond slowly to laser hair removal as compared to patients with genetic hirsutism.
Q.5. Is hirsutism reversible?
Well, hirsutism can be reversible or irreversible. We can’t say before properly diagnosing the severity of the condition. It varies from person to person. If you experience a flare-up, contact your doctor.
