Detox is a natural process that is needed because there is accumulation of toxins due to pollutants in the environment, eating refined foods and processed items.  Our organs perform the remarkable task of neutralizing toxins in the body—through kidneys, liver and colon.

However, nutritionists say that if one is eating heavily, gorging on junk food or on medication, detoxification may slowdown, and one may end up feeling sluggish or congested.

However, we can aid this cleansing process by following a natural detox routine. Read on to find how to naturally detoxify the body.

How to Detox Your Body

Following are some ways to naturally detox your body:

1. Avoid junk food and eat clean

This goes without saying—eat clean and avoid junk and processed food. Processed food is full of preservatives that can be harmful for the body. To detoxify the body, avoid all these foods and eat more greens. Even excessive salt can lead to bloating and bad health. Sugar is a big no, even as little as a teaspoon. If you have a craving, try a carrot instead.

2. Fast for a few days every month

Fasting helps rid the body of accumulated toxins. Fasting a couple of days every month can prove pretty beneficial for the body. The digestive system gets a break and the intestines clean themselves when one fasts. The body rejuvenates and feels lighter. However, it is important to consume light meals and avoid heavy foods during this time.

3. Drink more water

Drinking more water will not only rid the body of toxins, but it will also help you lose weight, feel fuller and help your skin glow. You can see visible results if you consume about four liters of water during detox time. Moreover, it will boost your energy levels and you will feel fresher. If you find it difficult to drink so much water, try flavoring it with some mint leaves, lemon wedges or citrus fruits.

4. Exercise

Nothing healthy is complete without exercising at the same time. Exercise is not only important for being healthy, but it also boosts your mood and helps you feel fresher at the same time. You can choose your preferred mode—jogging, aerobics, yoga, swimming—and indulge yourself three to four times a week for at least a half-hour or so.

5. Try smoothies

Eliminate the processed food from your diet, but also make sure that you are eating healthy so that you don’t feel lethargic. Organically grown vegetables and fruits that are free of pesticides will aid the detox process and boost your immunity at the same time. If you don’t like munching on vegetables, try making a smoothie instead.

Customize the flavor to your taste—add lemons or apples or strawberries for natural sugar, and consume kale and spinach in this form. This will keep your blood sugar up so you don’t have those hunger pangs. Furthermore, it will keep your stomach full so you have lesser cravings.

If you are still unsure of how to meet your daily caloric requirement and detoxing, try talking to a registered nutritionist or dietitian.
