Oral And Maxillofacial Surgery: Q And A With Dr. A. Naqash

Oral and maxillofacial surgeries are done to restore the structure of the face to the desired condition; it is done in cases of accidents, bone fractures, cancer and for aesthetic purposes.

When you suffer from an intense traumatic dental surgery, you need specialized help for the facial area. These professionals are called oral and maxillofacial surgeons. To learn about this surgery, watch Dr. Asim Naqash, an experienced dentist in Lahore, give his expert advice about what medical issues require oral and maxillofacial surgery as a treatment.

Q.1: What is oral & maxillofacial surgery?

Oral literally means cavity and mouth, maxillofacial means maxilla and jaws, facial means the face. We deal with common problems relating to all of the above. Maxillofacial trauma is most common; the face comprises of 14 bones and if anyone of these bones is fractured in road accidents, cases of violence or sports the patient are brought to us. Sometimes, patients directly come to us and sometimes they are referred to us by other specialists as well.

Q.2: What is oral cancer?

Cancer relates to any increasingly rapid growth or an uncontrolled growth that occurs in an imbalanced manner. Oral cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Pakistan.

Q.3: How can oral cancer be prevented?

In any case, prevention is better than a cure. I advise people to regularly examine themselves in front of a mirror and if they notice anything unusual on the roof of mouth, neck or tongue in the form of swelling, an ulcer or a lump they must consult a doctor.

If this abnormality persists for more than two weeks even after normal treatment, a specialist should be concerned. I also discourage my patients from using home remedies because it further complicates the situation.

Q.4: What are dental implants?

Basically, when a patient suffers from tooth loss or in case the tooth becomes badly damaged due to an accident, a dental implant is performed. Multiple options for tooth replacement are available but the most popular and reliable is a dental implant, it is a small procedure done under local anesthesia. A structured screw is placed in the bone and sometimes a tooth is immediately placed on it and sometimes we wait for 2-3 months for proper healing and then plant a tooth.

Q.5: What are the effects of aging on facial appearance?

As the age increases, effects are visible both on the face and body due to hormonal changes or as a result of ultraviolet radiation. Basically the ligaments holding facial structures become weak and toning of the muscles is lost.

The body appears not very upright, different parts become saggy and droopy. Wrinkles and hollowness are visible on the face. Maxillofacial surgeons perform minimally invasive treatments and invasive procedures to counter these effects.

Minimally invasive procedures are done on mild to moderate effects such as dermal fillers to regain glow etcetera while invasive is done on moderate to severe effects of aging, for example, eyebrow lifting and forehead lifting.
