Ringworm affects millions of people across Pakistan every year, especially during the hot and humid summer months. It is one of the most common reasons people visit a skin doctor.
Most cases can be managed at home with the right antifungal cream.
The condition has nothing to do with worms. The name comes from the ring-shaped rash it leaves on the skin, which can look alarming but is usually not dangerous.

Ringworm, known locally as daad, is a contagious fungal infection of the skin. It appears as a red, scaly, ring-shaped patch that may itch or burn.
The infection is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, which live on dead skin tissue. It can affect the body, scalp, feet, and groin.
The signs of ringworm are usually easy to spot. Most people notice a patch on their skin that grows into a clear ring shape over a few days.
Common signs include:
On darker skin tones, the ring may appear brown or gray rather than bright red. The rash can appear anywhere on the body.
Ringworm spreads quickly in warm, humid conditions. Pakistan’s summer climate, combined with crowded households and shared spaces, creates ideal conditions for the infection to pass between people.
The fungus spreads through:
Children are especially at risk because they play in close contact with others. Adults who sweat heavily or wear tight clothing are also more prone to this infection.
Most cases of ringworm on the body respond well to antifungal treatment applied directly to the skin. The key is to start early and use the cream consistently, even after the rash looks better.
Several antifungal creams are available at pharmacies across Pakistan without a prescription. Each works slightly differently.
Clotrimazole (e.g., Canesten, Cloderm): This is one of the most widely available options in Pakistan. It is applied twice daily and usually shows results within one to two weeks.
Terbinafine (e.g., Lamisil, Terbicil): This works faster than clotrimazole for most people. Results may appear within one week of regular use.
Miconazole (e.g., Daktarin): Another well-tolerated option, often used when clotrimazole has not produced results.
Ketoconazole cream: Useful for stubborn or widespread infections. A doctor’s recommendation is helpful before using this one.
Ringworm on the scalp, called tinea capitis, is more difficult to treat than body ringworm. Antifungal creams do not work well on the scalp because they cannot reach the fungus inside the hair follicles.
This type requires oral antifungal medicine prescribed by a doctor. Signs of scalp ringworm include:
Children are more likely to develop scalp ringworm than adults. If a child shows these signs, a dermatologist should be seen promptly rather than attempting self-treatment.
Stopping ringworm from spreading, or from coming back, requires a few consistent habits.
Good personal hygiene is the most effective barrier against reinfection.
Home treatment works well for most ringworm cases. However, medical attention is needed in certain situations.
A doctor should be seen if:
Recurring ringworm may point to a weakened immune system or an undiagnosed condition. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and prescribe stronger oral antifungals when needed.
You can make appointments with certified dermatologists who are available for consultation in Lahore and other major cities across Pakistan.
Ringworm is a common, treatable fungal skin infection that responds well to antifungal creams when caught early.
Starting treatment on time, completing the full course, and avoiding shared personal items are the most important steps to clearing the infection and stopping it from returning.
Most ringworm cases on the body clear within two to four weeks of consistent antifungal cream use. The cream should be applied even after the rash fades to prevent the infection from returning.
Ringworm spreads through direct skin contact or by sharing personal items like towels, combs, and clothing. Infected pets can also pass it to humans.
Ringworm on the body is not dangerous but can spread to larger areas and to other people if left untreated. Scalp ringworm, if ignored, can cause permanent hair loss.
Clotrimazole and terbinafine creams are commonly recommended and widely available in Pakistan. Terbinafine often works faster, while clotrimazole is a reliable first option.
Ringworm can return if treatment is stopped too early or if re-exposure occurs. Avoiding shared personal items and completing the full course of cream reduces the risk of recurrence.
Most antifungal creams for body ringworm are available without a prescription at local pharmacies. However, scalp or nail ringworm requires a doctor’s prescription for oral antifungal medication.
