9 Ways To Prevent Cataracts

Cataracts is surprisingly the most common vision problem; it is actually a common threat for everyone as it causes visual deterioration due to ageing. Cataracts has trebled with the increase in the older population thus becoming a major eye condition, surpassing glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. In some cases cataracts are present at birth or develop at a young age. They can also be the result of an eye injury, surgery or any eye complication.

They develop slowly; vision does not deteriorate in days or months, but rather takes years to have a considerable and noticeable effect. Different types of cataracts form in different areas of the eyes, present with different symptoms and are treated differently. Most cataracts need surgery in which an artificial lens is put in place of the actual lens.

Though there are no scientifically proven techniques to stop the progression of the condition or to prevent it, some healthy dietary changes and simple lifestyle modifications can reduce the risk factors and improve vision. The below mentioned tips will help you maintain healthy vision:

1- Choose a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables

Adding a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to your diet ensures that you’re getting many vitamins and nutrients. Fruits and vegetables have many antioxidants, which help maintain the health of your eyes.

Studies haven’t proved that antioxidants in pill form can prevent cataracts. But, a large population study recently showed that a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals was associated with a reduced risk of developing cataracts. Fruits and vegetables have many proven health benefits and are a safe way to increase the amount of minerals and vitamins in your diet.

2- Hydrate Appropriately

Perhaps, hydration remains one of the most underrated factors that can have an impact on progression of cataracts in a person. That’s why health professionals recommend appropriate hydration and failure in doing so can result in accumulation of harmful body toxins capable of inflicting health issues in general, and eye health issues in particular, cataracts being one of them. Ample water intake helps our body flush out harmful toxins with much ease. So, you better develop the habit of drinking water frequently at regular intervals.

3- Quit smoking

This habit may be a leading cause of cataract progression. Researchers have shown a number of adverse effects smoking has on one’s health. It doubles the chances of cataract formation by increasing damage caused by free radicals. Smokers can reduce their risk of cataracts in the long run by quitting smoking.

4- UV protection

Protect your eye from the exposure of extreme sunlight that can increase the risk of developing cataracts. So be sure to wear a protective hat and sunglasses during long outdoor trips to decrease the chances of cataracts.

5- Maintain your blood sugar level

As you may know, diabetes is considered a trigger for several health issues and one of them is cataracts. People with diabetes are at greater risk and so need to maintain their blood sugar level to prevent themselves from other health complications and to maintain healthy vision.

6- Avoid using corticosteroids for a long period of time

Corticosteroids are the steroid hormones that are often used in treatment. Their long term usage boosts the formation of cataracts. One should consult a health care  before starting taking any new drug.

7- Reduction in alcohol intake

It is important not to ignore the risk factors of alcoholism. Chronic consumption of alcohol leads to life threatening diseases. It also increases the chance of developing cataracts.

8- See your eye-specialist regularly

Get your eyes examined by a doctor on a yearly basis to ensure healthy and clear vision.  This way, your eye care professional will be able to detect signs of cataracts, glaucoma and other vision disorders. If the issue is detected early, your 6/6 vision may be saved.

9- Avoid trauma

Traumatic cataract has no age predilection, that is, trauma at any age can result in the formation and progression of cataract. It is therefore essential to avoid eye injuries by taking appropriate preventive measures. The most important thing is to use protective eyewear, including glasses and eye shields, to prevent eye injuries in hazardous situations at work and play.

The above self-care measures will help keep your vision healthy, but if your cataract condition progresses further and your vision loss is interfering in your daily tasks, then consult our eye care professionals to get the best advice.
