7 Top Tips for a Fitter Summer Vacation

It’s that time of the year again which everyone absolutely adores: summer vacations! A lot of people head out of their hometown for a nice holiday during the summers. Even though vacationing is fun, it often gets hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle while on vacations. First of all, most of us loosen up during vacations and do as we please. The alive and well culture, the food, the joyful markets and the dazzling lights make us forget about the humdrum of life back home and we give in to the pleasures of vacationing, where food takes the top place! However, nothing is impossible and you can certainly eat healthy during vacations. Here are some tips to get fit this summer while you are off vacationing:

1- Be Mindful Of Your Calorie Intake

We often get carried away during holidays and convince ourselves that holiday calories don’t count. Moreover, healthier options often seem boring. While it is fine to treat yourselves once in a while, you must not get off track while vacationing. Don’t let the holidays be the reason behind a calorie surplus. A lot of us have the tendency to eat more when eating out. The food serves in restaurants is often high in sodium and unhealthy fats. Moreover, hotels often serve bigger portions as well. Try to order an entree instead of the main course meal or share your meal with a family member or a friend. Controlling portion size is a must when you are holidaying.

2- Be Physically Active

Being on vacations doesn’t mean that you become a couch potato. You can pick activities that are a natural form of aerobics. For instance, you can go swimming or you can go for a hike. Explore what your chosen destination has to offer, for instance, Thailand offers a lot of water-based activities such as swimming, diving, and boating. Go for activities that sound fun to you. If you are a gym enthusiast, you can make use of the facilities available at the place you are staying.

3- Walk More

The best way to explore a new destination is on foot! Whenever possible, go for a walk instead of taking a cab or a bus to explore a place. This will not only be interactive but will also keep you healthy. Although this might not be possible in some places, European cities like London, Paris, and Rome are great for exploring sites on foot. If you are on a beach vacation, you can go for a walk by sea every morning.

4- Visit The Local Food Market

Being on a holiday doesn’t mean that you cannot eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Visit a local market and buy some fresh fruits and vegetables. This would also be a great chance to consume vegetables and fruits that are not available in your country.

Getting the traveler in you to roam doesn’t have to mean that you start wolfing down complex carbohydrates and saturated fats every chance you get! Keep the binge days on hold for as much as possible, and yes, that includes vacations as well!

5- Increase your water intake

Most of the people do not drink as much water as they should. It is always suggested to drink more water. It is extremely important to stay hydrated to keep oneself focused. One can calculate their minimum daily intake in fluid ounces by multiplying their bodyweight in pounds to 0.67. The daily ounces increase during hot weather.

6- Make sure you get adequate sleep

Always get ample sleep. Even though it can be debated how much it is needed, every individual is different. Therefore, one should consistently get as much sleep as their body needs. Set a routine and put up an alarm for the same time each morning. It should be remembered that some of the post-exercise gains are made when the body is resting. Therefore, it is not suggested to go running on 4 hours of sleep if it does not work for your body.

7- Keep stretching

A person’s health and fitness routines are often disturbed by summer travels. One should try to build day to day healthy habits when they are travelling. As little as 5-minute stretches in the morning and evening can keep you fit and make sit easier to return to regular classes after holidays. No need to panic if a workout is missed or the routine gets off if you make an effort to make your adventure as healthy as possible because then even small modifications can lead to huge differences.
