What Experts Say
Ceftriaxone is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that stops bacteria from building their protective cell wall. This bactericidal action makes it effective against a wide range of gram positive and gram negative organisms, including many bacteria that resist older antibiotics.
Because it reaches high concentrations in blood, tissue and cerebrospinal fluid, ceftriaxone is a preferred choice for serious infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, typhoid fever and complicated urinary tract infections. Its long half life allows once daily dosing in most cases, which supports better treatment completion in hospital and outpatient settings.
Ceftriaxone is given only as an intravenous or intramuscular injection under medical supervision, never self administered at home. Doctors monitor for allergic reactions, especially in patients with a known penicillin allergy, and adjust the dose carefully in newborns and in patients with liver or kidney disease.
