What is Complete Blood Count (CBC)

A complete blood count or CBC is a blood test that measures different components of your blood. It is also called Hemogram or CBC with Differential.

Why is a CBC performed?

A CBC is recommended by health professionals to determine your overall health or to screen for various diseases/conditions like anemia, blood disorders, cancer, inflammation or infection.

What is the purpose of a CBC?

The purpose of a CBC is to thoroughly evaluate the cells that circulate in your blood. It is done by measuring various parameters, counting cells and evaluating the physical features of some of these cells.
Under normal circumstances cells are produced and then mature in bone marrow before being released into the bloodstream. Three cells that a regular CBC test evaluates are:

  1. RBCs Red Blood Cells
  2. WBCs White Blood Cells
  3.  Platelets

When is a CBC ordered?

A CBC is a very common blood test. It is either ordered as a part of routine checkup, to monitor an already existing disease or to evaluate any bodily symptoms that indicate a disease. These symptoms include:

  • Fevers
  • Frequent infections
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness and tiredness
  • Red spots on the skin
  • Abdominal pain due to enlarged liver or spleen
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Bleeding
  • Easy bruising
  • Pain in joints and bones

What diseases can be detected with a CBC?

A CBC can help detect various conditions. Some of which are as follows:

  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Bone marrow disorders
  • Infections
  • Dehydration
  • Thalassemia
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Lymphoma
  • Low platelets
  • Inflammation
  • Hemoglobin abnormalities
  • Cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Anemia
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Myeloproliferative neoplasms

How is a CBC performed?

A CBC is performed just like any other blood test. A phlebotomist will tie a band around your arm to make your veins prominent then clean your arm with an alcohol swab, next he will draw the required amount of blood in a test tube or vial. Then he will apply a bandage to the puncture site.

CBC test normal range

The results from a CBC can be read easily if you are well aware of the normal ranges. Following are the normal blood count results for adults:
  • Red blood cells:
             male: (4.35-5.65 trillion cells/L*)
             female: (3.92-5.13 trillion cells/ L*)
  • Platelets:
             male: 135-317 billion/L*
             female: 157-371 billion/L*
  • Hemoglobin:
             male: 13.2-16.6 grams/dL**
             female: 11.6-15 grams/dL**
  • Hematocrit:
             male: 38.3-48.6 percent
             female: 35.5-44.9 percent
  • White blood cell count:
             3.4-9.6 billion cells/L*
*L= liter
**dL: deciliter

If your results show anything below or above the normal range then it means that you may have a problem within your body. Further testing and medications will be recommended by your doctor according to your situation to treat you in a better way.
