What is Liver Function Test (LFT)

An LFT test is used to determine the overall health of your liver by measuring levels of several enzymes, bilirubin and proteins made by the liver. Problems within a person’s liver can make them very sick, and can even be life-threatening. LFT test is also known as liver function test, liver chemistries, or liver panel.

How many substance levels can be measured with an LFT test?

An LFT test is capable of determining different substance levels on a single blood sample at the same time. These substances are as follows:

  • Total protein: it measures the total amount of protein present in your blood
  • Albumin: a protein made by liver
  • Bilirubin: a waste product made in the liver
  • ALT (alanine transaminase)
  • Prothrombin time (PT): a protein associated with blood clotting

  • If you are suffering from gallbladder disease.

  • If you have high triglycerides, high blood pressure, diabetes or anemia.

LFT test procedure

An LFT test is usually conducted through the following steps:

  • A healthcare professional will clean your skin with an alcohol swab.
  • An elastic strap will be tied around your arm to make your veins visible.
  • A small needle will be used to draw some blood from your arm, which will be collected in a vial or test tube.
  • A bandage with gauze will be placed over the puncture site.

What are the risks of an LFT test?

Blood draws are routine procedures and their side effects are quite rare. However some risks of a liver function test include: hematoma, fainting, infections, or excessive bleeding.

LFT test normal range is between 10-40 units/litre for AST and 7-56 for ALT. If your ranges are above or below the normal range there might be a problem with your liver.
