What Experts Say
Actifed P Syrup combines paracetamol with a decongestant and an antihistamine. One syrup can therefore treat fever, pain and nasal symptoms of a cold or flu together. Doctors often prefer it when fever and congestion appear together, such as in the first days of flu.
Paracetamol lowers fever and relieves mild pain. Pseudoephedrine shrinks the swollen lining of the nose to ease congestion. Triprolidine blocks histamine, which reduces sneezing and a runny nose. It treats symptoms only and does not shorten the illness. Rest and plenty of fluids remain important during recovery.
Since the syrup already contains paracetamol, no other paracetamol product should be taken at the same time. It can raise blood pressure and cause drowsiness, so it should be used for a few days only unless a doctor advises more. People with liver disease, heart disease or high blood pressure should take medical advice first, and the dose should never be doubled.

Drug Interactions
- MAO inhibitors: Using them together can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure, so a gap of 14 days after stopping an MAOI is needed.
- Other paracetamol products: Combining them can lead to an accidental paracetamol overdose.
- Sedatives and alcohol: These add to the drowsiness caused by triprolidine.
- Warfarin: Regular high dose paracetamol can increase the blood thinning effect, so monitoring may be needed.
Risks and warnings
- Liver safety: Too much paracetamol from this and other products can damage the liver, so total daily paracetamol must stay within limits.
- Blood pressure and heart: Pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure and heart rate, so heart disease and hypertension need medical advice first.
- Drowsiness: Triprolidine can cause sleepiness, so driving should be avoided until the effect is known.
- Alcohol and liver disease: Regular alcohol use or existing liver disease increases the risk of paracetamol related harm.
- Prostate and eye conditions: Caution is needed in enlarged prostate and glaucoma.
