What Experts Say

Montelukast blocks leukotrienes, chemicals the body releases that tighten the airways and inflame the nose. Blocking them lowers wheeze, cough and nasal blockage over time. Doctors often add it when inhalers alone do not fully control symptoms, or when asthma and hay fever occur together.

It is a preventer, not a reliever. Taking it daily reduces asthma attacks, but it will not stop a sudden attack, so a rescue inhaler should always stay at hand. Benefit is usually seen within days for allergy symptoms, but asthma control may take a couple of weeks of regular use.

Mood and sleep changes, including agitation, low mood and vivid dreams, have been reported with montelukast. Any change in behavior should be reported to a doctor promptly. It does not replace prescribed inhalers, and people should keep using their other medicines as directed unless a doctor changes the plan.

How to use Aireez tablet 10mg?

• Adults and teenagers 15 years and older: 1 Aireez 10mg tablet once daily, or as prescribed by the doctor.
• For asthma, take it in the evening. For allergic rhinitis, take it at a consistent time each day.
• For exercise induced symptoms, take it at least 2 hours before activity, and not more than once in 24 hours.
• Children under 15 years need a lower strength, as prescribed.

Drug Interactions

• Phenobarbital: It can lower montelukast blood levels and weaken the effect.
• Rifampicin: It may reduce montelukast levels, so a dose review may be needed.
• Gemfibrozil: It raises montelukast levels and should be used with caution.
• Asthma inhalers and steroids: Montelukast should be added to, not replace, prescribed inhalers unless a doctor says so.

Risks and warnings

• Not for sudden attacks: It does not relieve an acute asthma attack, so a rescue inhaler must be kept available.
• Mood and behavior changes: Agitation, depression, sleep problems or unusual thoughts need urgent medical review.
• Stopping steroids: Oral or inhaled steroid doses should not be reduced abruptly when starting montelukast.
• Liver: Caution is needed in liver disease, and symptoms like yellowing of eyes should be reported.
