- Affordable option for routine deworming in adults and children above two years
What Experts Say
Albendazole is a benzimidazole anthelmintic. It binds to the parasite's beta tubulin, blocking microtubule formation and glucose uptake inside worm cells. This slowly starves the parasite of energy until it dies, making it effective against a wide range of intestinal and tissue dwelling worms.
In Pakistan, contaminated water, unwashed produce, and soil contact make intestinal worm infections common. A single dose usually clears standard roundworm or hookworm infections. Hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis need repeated 28 day cycles under medical supervision, often with imaging to confirm response.
Doctors monitor liver enzymes and blood counts during prolonged courses since extended use can affect the liver and bone marrow. Albendazole is generally avoided in the first trimester of pregnancy. Taking it with a fatty meal improves absorption, which matters most for tissue infections rather than routine deworming.
