About Amdipine Tablet 5mg
Amdipine 5mg is a calcium channel blocker tablet for managing high blood pressure and reducing chest pain.
Amdipine Tablet 5mg Uses
- Manages hypertension as a first-line treatment in adults newly starting antihypertensive therapy.
- Reduces the frequency and severity of chronic stable angina attacks by relaxing coronary blood vessels.
- Controls vasospastic angina in patients whose chest pain is caused by coronary artery spasm.
- Suitable as a starting dose in elderly patients or those with mild to moderate hypertension.
- Used as part of a multi-drug antihypertensive regimen in patients whose blood pressure is not controlled by a single agent.
Amdipine Tablet 5mg Benefits
- Amlodipine 5mg is the standard starting dose, allowing physicians to assess patient response before escalating to a higher dose.
- Once-daily dosing improves medication adherence compared to twice-daily antihypertensives.
- Long half-life provides smooth 24-hour blood pressure coverage without significant fluctuations between doses.
- Generally well tolerated in elderly patients and in patients with diabetes or chronic kidney disease.
- Does not affect cholesterol levels, blood sugar, or electrolytes, making it metabolically neutral.
What Experts Say
Cardiologists recommend amlodipine 5mg as the standard starting dose for most adults newly beginning calcium channel blocker therapy. The 5mg dose establishes effective blood pressure and angina control in many patients, and its gradual 24-hour action profile allows physicians to assess the response before deciding on dose escalation.
Clinical hypertension guidelines recognize amlodipine as a first-line antihypertensive due to its proven cardiovascular outcome benefits. At 5mg, it reduces the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular mortality, outcomes supported by major outcome trials including ALLHAT and ASCOT-BPLA.
Amlodipine 5mg is widely used in elderly patients, where lower starting doses reduce the risk of orthostatic hypotension and falls. Cardiologists note it is well tolerated across a broad range of patients, including those with kidney disease or metabolic conditions, making it one of the most commonly prescribed antihypertensives in Pakistan.

How to use Amdipine Tablet 5mg?
- Take one Amdipine 5mg tablet once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
- Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice throughout treatment as these can increase amlodipine blood levels.
- Continue taking Amdipine even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms and stopping treatment abruptly can cause a rebound rise in blood pressure.
Drug Interactions
Amdipine 5mg may interact with certain medications. Inform your doctor of all prescription and non-prescription drugs you are currently using.
- CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, erythromycin, diltiazem): These agents raise amlodipine blood levels, potentially causing excessive blood pressure lowering.
- CYP3A4 inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin, St. John's Wort): May reduce the antihypertensive effect of amlodipine by increasing its metabolism.
- Simvastatin: Concurrent use may increase simvastatin exposure. Limit simvastatin to 20mg daily when taken alongside amlodipine.
- Tacrolimus: Amlodipine may increase tacrolimus blood levels. Monitor tacrolimus concentrations closely in transplant patients.
Risks and warnings
- Allergy: Do not use if you are allergic to amlodipine or any other dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker.
- Cardiogenic shock: Amdipine is contraindicated in patients with cardiogenic shock or hemodynamically unstable heart failure.
- Low blood pressure: Use with caution in patients who already have low blood pressure, as amlodipine may reduce it further.
- Pregnancy: Not recommended during pregnancy. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking Amdipine.
- Children: Amdipine 5mg is used in children over 6 years only under pediatric specialist supervision. Keep all tablets out of reach of children.
