About Amgydex Eye Drop 0.1% / 0.3%

Combination antibiotic and steroid eye drops used to treat bacterial eye infections with inflammation.

Amgydex Eye Drop Uses

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis with associated inflammation
  • Post operative eye inflammation and infection after cataract or other eye surgery
  • Corneal injury carrying a risk of bacterial infection
  • Blepharitis with a bacterial component
  • Anterior segment inflammation that needs both antibiotic cover and steroid control

Amgydex Eye Drop Benefits

  • Combines an antibiotic and a steroid in one bottle so patients avoid using two separate drops
  • Tobramycin targets the bacteria causing the infection
  • Dexamethasone reduces swelling, redness and discomfort at the same time
  • Supports faster comfort during recovery from eye surgery
  • A single dosing schedule improves compliance in patients managing a painful eye condition

What Experts Say

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that blocks the release of chemicals responsible for swelling, redness and pain in the eye. Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that stops bacteria from multiplying. Combining both lets doctors treat active infection and inflammation together instead of using two separate drops.

This combination is generally reserved for infections with significant inflammation, such as after eye surgery or corneal injury. A steroid used alone in an infected eye can allow bacteria to spread unchecked, while an antibiotic alone may leave the inflammation untreated and slow healing.

Doctors usually limit steroid containing eye drops to short courses and check intraocular pressure during treatment, since prolonged corticosteroid use can raise eye pressure and delay corneal healing. Follow up visits let the doctor confirm the infection is clearing before stopping the steroid component safely.

  • Close the eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes and press lightly on the inner corner near the nose to reduce drainage
  • Wait at least 5 minutes before using any other eye drop
  • Use at the interval prescribed by the doctor, usually every 6 hours or as directed
  • Do not stop the drops early even if symptoms improve unless the doctor advises it
  • Replace the cap tightly after each use and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface

Drug Interactions

  • Other Ophthalmic Steroids: Using another steroid eye drop at the same time raises the risk of increased eye pressure
  • Other Topical Antibiotics: Combining with another aminoglycoside eye drop does not add benefit and may increase local irritation
  • Systemic Aminoglycosides: Concurrent use with injectable aminoglycosides such as gentamicin may add to the risk of toxicity in patients with kidney impairment
  • Contact Lens Solutions: Preservatives in the drop can interact with soft contact lens material, so lenses should be removed before use

Risks and warnings

  • Raised Eye Pressure: Prolonged steroid use can increase intraocular pressure and lead to glaucoma or vision changes if not monitored
  • Not For Viral Or Fungal Infections: This medicine should not be used for viral, fungal or mycobacterial eye infections without direct medical supervision, since the steroid component can worsen these infections
  • Delayed Healing: Corticosteroids can slow corneal wound healing after injury or surgery
  • Cataract Risk: Long term steroid eye drop use is linked to posterior subcapsular cataract formation
  • Superinfection: Extended use may allow resistant bacteria or fungi to grow in the eye
  • Pregnancy And Breastfeeding: Use only if a doctor confirms it is necessary, since safety data in pregnancy is limited
