What Experts Say
Montelukast works by blocking leukotrienes, chemicals the body releases during an asthma or allergy flare that tighten the airways and trigger swelling and mucus buildup. Taking it every evening keeps these chemicals in check before symptoms even start, rather than treating an attack once it begins.
Pulmonologists often add montelukast for patients who still wheeze or cough despite regular inhaler use, or for children who find inhalers hard to use correctly. It also helps people whose allergies flare with dust, pollen or sudden weather changes, which is common across Pakistan's varied climate and dusty urban air.
Doctors are now required to warn patients about mood and behavior changes linked to montelukast, including anxiety, unusual agitation, nightmares or, rarely, suicidal thoughts. Anyone starting the tablet, or a parent giving it to a child, should watch closely for these changes and report them right away instead of waiting for the next scheduled visit.
Drug Class
- Leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Belongs to the anti asthma and anti allergy class of medicines
