What Experts Say
Diclofenac potassium belongs to the phenylacetic acid class of nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs. It works by blocking cyclooxygenase enzymes that produce prostaglandins, the chemicals responsible for pain, swelling and fever. As a potassium salt it dissolves faster than diclofenac sodium, which is why doctors often prefer it for quick relief in acute pain episodes such as gout attacks or muscle injuries.
In Pakistan, NSAIDs like diclofenac potassium are among the most self prescribed pain relievers, often bought from pharmacies without a proper prescription. This pattern is concerning because unsupervised long term use is linked to stomach ulcers, kidney strain and raised blood pressure, problems already common in patients with poorly controlled diabetes or hypertension.
Doctors generally recommend using this tablet for the shortest period needed and always with food to protect the stomach lining. Patients with heart disease, kidney problems or a history of ulcers should consult a physician first. Anyone needing pain relief for more than a few days should get a proper medical evaluation instead of continuing self medication.
