What Experts Say
Diclofenac potassium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that blocks cyclooxygenase enzymes and lowers the prostaglandins that drive pain, swelling, and fever. The potassium salt dissolves quickly in the stomach, so it reaches the bloodstream faster than enteric coated diclofenac sodium, which makes it useful for acute pain.
Doctors usually prescribe the 75mg strength once or twice a day, keeping the total daily dose within 150mg. Guidelines recommend the lowest effective dose for the shortest time because stomach, heart, and kidney risks rise with higher doses and longer treatment. People with heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, kidney problems, or previous stomach ulcers need a doctor's review before starting therapy.
During longer courses, physicians monitor blood pressure, kidney function, and warning signs such as black stools or persistent stomach pain. Arthritis, low back pain, and other musculoskeletal disorders remain frequent reasons for clinic visits across Pakistan, and supervised short NSAID courses help limit unsafe self medication.

- Corticosteroids: Steroid tablets taken together raise the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
- SSRI antidepressants: These medicines increase the chance of stomach bleeding when combined with NSAIDs.
- Blood pressure medicines and diuretics: Diclofenac can blunt their effect and strain the kidneys.
- Lithium: NSAIDs reduce lithium clearance and can push levels into the toxic range.

Risks and warnings
- Stomach bleeding: Diclofenac can cause ulcers and bleeding in the stomach or intestines, sometimes without warning symptoms.
- Heart risk: NSAIDs raise the chance of heart attack and stroke, especially at high doses or with long term use.
- Kidney caution: The drug can reduce kidney blood flow in dehydrated, elderly, or kidney impaired patients.
- Liver caution: Liver enzymes may rise during treatment, so report dark urine, unusual fatigue, or yellowing of the skin.
- Allergy and asthma: Avoid this medicine if aspirin or other NSAIDs have ever triggered asthma, hives, or facial swelling.
