Attapulgite is a natural clay mineral, chemically a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. In the gut it acts as an adsorbent, binding excess water, bacteria and irritants that contribute to loose stools. This physical action helps firm up the stool rather than working through the nervous system like some other antidiarrheal drugs.

Because it works locally in the intestine, very little of the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream. This makes it a relatively safe option for short courses of mild to moderate diarrhea. Drug Interactions

• Digoxin: Absorption may be reduced if taken at the same time.
