Axidox Capsule Uses

• Used for respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
• Effective against sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and urethritis.
• Treats skin infections, including acne, cellulitis, and wounds unresponsive to other antibiotics.
• Indicated for rickettsial infections like typhus fever, Q fever, and tick-borne illnesses.
• Helpful in managing cholera, common in flood-affected regions of Pakistan.
• Given to patients requiring malaria prevention before travel to high-risk areas.
• Approved for bacterial eye infections, including trachoma-related conditions.

Dosages of Axidox Capsule

• Adults: 100mg per dose, taken once or twice daily as directed by the doctor.
• Maximum daily dose: 200mg, unless a higher dose is specifically prescribed for serious infections.
• Children under 8 years: not recommended due to the risk of permanent teeth discolouration.

How to use Axidox Capsule?

• Axidox capsule can be taken with food or milk if stomach upset occurs.
• Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water, without crushing or opening it.
• Stay upright for at least 30 minutes after taking the Axidox capsule to avoid throat or food pipe irritation.
• Complete the full prescribed course even if you start feeling better within a few days.
• Do not stop this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor.

Axidox Capsule Side Effects

• Nausea or upset stomach
• Vomiting
• Mild diarrhoea
• Loss of appetite
• Skin rash or itching
• Increased sensitivity to sunlight, causing the skin to burn more easily
• Darkened skin patches with sun exposure
• Vaginal itching or unusual discharge in women
• Headache or dizziness
• Difficulty swallowing or a burning feeling in the chest or throat
• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, or throat
• Serious skin reactions, including widespread rash, blistering, or peeling
• Watery or bloody diarrhoea, which may indicate a gut infection
• Signs of increased pressure in the brain, including severe headache and blurred vision

Drug Interactions

• Antacids (aluminium, magnesium, or calcium-based): These reduce doxycycline absorption. Take an Axidox capsule at least 1 to 2 hours before or after an antacid.
• Iron supplements and multivitamins containing iron: These block doxycycline from working properly. Take an Axidox capsule 2 hours before or 3 hours after iron products.
• Oral contraceptive pills: Axidox capsule may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Use a non-hormonal contraceptive method during treatment.
• Isotretinoin and retinoid medicines: Combining these with doxycycline raises the risk of increased pressure in the brain. This combination should be avoided.
• Penicillin-type antibiotics: Taking both together can reduce how well each antibiotic works. Your doctor will advise if both are needed.
• Warfarin and blood thinners: Doxycycline can increase the effect of warfarin, raising the risk of bleeding. Dose adjustment may be needed.
• Bismuth subsalicylate (common in antidiarrhoeals): This reduces how much doxycycline your body absorbs. Avoid taking them at the same time.

Contraindications

• Known allergy to doxycycline or any other tetracycline antibiotic.
• Pregnant women, particularly from the second trimester onwards, as it can harm the baby's bone and teeth development.
• Breastfeeding mothers, as doxycycline passes into breast milk and can affect the infant.
• Children under 8 years of age, unless directed by a specialist with no alternative available.
• Patients with a confirmed allergy to any ingredient listed in the Axidox capsule.
