What Experts Say
Doctors across Pakistan often prefer azithromycin for outpatient respiratory infections because its long tissue half life allows a short three to five day course instead of the ten day regimens needed with older macrolides. This shorter course improves how reliably patients finish their treatment, which lowers the chance of the infection returning.
Physicians recommend checking for a history of irregular heart rhythm or prolonged QT interval before prescribing, since macrolides can affect the heart's electrical activity in rare cases. Liver function is also considered in patients with existing liver disease, since the drug is processed mainly through the liver rather than the kidneys.
Prescribers generally reserve azithromycin for infections likely to be bacterial rather than viral, since overuse of macrolide antibiotics contributes to resistant bacterial strains over time. Completing the full prescribed course, even after symptoms improve, remains a key part of how doctors counsel patients on this medicine.
