What Experts Say
High blood pressure affects nearly one in three adults in Pakistan, and many need more than one medicine to reach a safe target. Baritec A combines amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, with olmesartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker, in one tablet. This combination is common in Pakistani cardiology practice, since single-drug therapy often fails to control moderate to severe hypertension.
Amlodipine relaxes the smooth muscles of blood vessel walls, while olmesartan blocks a hormone called angiotensin II that would otherwise narrow these vessels. Together, the two medicines lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone. Doctors in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi often prescribe this combination when pressure stays high despite lifestyle changes.
Regular blood pressure checks and kidney function tests are advised while on this medicine, since both hypertension and its treatment can affect kidney health over time. The tablet should not be stopped suddenly, even when a patient feels well, since blood pressure can rise again quickly. Consistent use, paired with a low-salt diet, is central to managing hypertension in Pakistan.
Drug Class
- Antihypertensive combination: Calcium Channel Blocker (Amlodipine) + Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (Olmesartan)

Drug Interactions

- NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac): Regular use can reduce the blood pressure lowering effect and raise the risk of kidney problems.
- Potassium supplements and salt substitutes: These can push potassium levels too high when combined with olmesartan.
- ACE inhibitors or aliskiren: Combining these with Baritec A, especially in diabetic or kidney patients, raises the risk of low blood pressure, high potassium, and kidney injury.
- Lithium: This combination can raise lithium levels in the blood and increase the risk of toxicity.
- Simvastatin (high doses): Combined use with amlodipine can increase the risk of muscle related side effects.
- Cyclosporine or tacrolimus: These immunosuppressants may interact with this medicine and require closer monitoring.
- Grapefruit juice: Large amounts may increase amlodipine levels in the blood, so regular consumption is best avoided while on this medicine.
