What Experts Say
Cephradine is a first generation cephalosporin antibiotic that interferes with bacterial cell wall construction. It binds penicillin binding proteins located in the cell wall and halts the cross linking step needed to keep the wall intact, so the bacterium eventually ruptures under its own internal pressure.
At the 500mg capsule strength, dosing is aimed at adults and older children who can swallow capsules and need a full antibacterial dose for moderate infections. The drug reaches useful blood concentrations quickly after an oral dose and clears mainly through the kidneys, which is why dose spacing is adjusted in anyone with reduced kidney function.
Because cephradine belongs to the beta lactam family, cross sensitivity with penicillin allergy is a recognized concern that prescribers screen for before starting treatment. Completing the entire prescribed course, even after symptoms improve, remains central to preventing relapse and limiting the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
