What Experts Say
Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies seen in general practice. Physicians often prefer a non ionic iron polymaltose complex over ferrous salts because the trivalent iron is bound to a polymaltose shell that releases iron gradually, unlike ferrous sulfate which releases ions rapidly and can irritate the stomach lining.
Pakistan carries one of the highest reported rates of iron deficiency anemia in the region, particularly among women of reproductive age, pregnant women and young children, so oral iron replacement remains a first line step before intravenous iron is considered. Diagnosis is usually confirmed with a complete blood count and serum ferritin before starting therapy.
Follow up monitoring typically includes a repeat hemoglobin check after four to six weeks, since a rise of at least one gram per deciliter is the expected response to adequate iron replacement. The complex interacts less with food and antacids than ionic iron salts, though separating doses from tetracyclines and levothyroxine is still advised.
