What Experts Say
Piroxicam is a long acting NSAID from the oxicam class that blocks the cyclooxygenase enzymes involved in prostaglandin production. Reducing prostaglandins lowers pain, swelling and inflammation in joints and soft tissue. Combining piroxicam with beta-cyclodextrin speeds up dissolution and absorption, which can mean faster pain relief.
Because piroxicam has a long half life of around fifty hours, one tablet a day usually keeps blood levels steady, which suits patients with chronic joint conditions who want simple dosing. The cyclodextrin form does not change piroxicam's underlying safety profile once absorbed, so the same long term precautions still apply with continued use.
Current guidance favors the lowest effective dose for the shortest period needed to control symptoms, especially in older adults or those with a history of stomach ulcers. Physicians often pair piroxicam with a stomach protecting medicine for longer courses, and blood pressure or kidney function may be checked periodically during treatment.
