Drug Interactions
- Hormonal contraceptives (combined oral contraceptive pills): Combining these with Brino capsule significantly raises the risk of blood clots. This combination is contraindicated.
- Factor IX complex concentrates: Concurrent use increases the risk of dangerous clotting. These two medicines must not be used together.
- Anti-inhibitor coagulant concentrates: Using these alongside Brino capsule increases the risk of thrombosis. Avoid unless advised otherwise by a specialist.
- Tissue plasminogen activators (clot-dissolving medicines): Brino capsule reduces the effectiveness of these medicines and must be stopped if they are needed.
- All-trans retinoic acid (used in certain blood cancers): This combination carries a serious risk of thrombotic complications. It is not recommended.
Risks and warnings
- History of blood clots: Brino capsule increases clotting activity and is dangerous for patients with prior DVT, stroke, or embolism.
- Kidney impairment: Tranexamic acid is cleared through the kidneys. Dose reduction is necessary in patients with reduced kidney function.
- Visual disturbances: Any sudden change in vision while taking Brino capsule requires immediate discontinuation and urgent medical review.
- Seizure history: Tranexamic acid has been associated with seizures in some patients, particularly at higher doses.
- Color vision defects: Patients with this condition should not use Brino capsule, as signs of toxicity may go undetected.
- Pregnancy: This medicine should only be used during pregnancy if the benefit clearly outweighs the risk, under strict medical supervision.
- Breastfeeding: Tranexamic acid passes into breast milk in small amounts. A doctor's guidance is required before use.
